If I understood correctly, when you deploy chatmail, there is webpage included, like here https://darkrun.dev/ for example.
If someone wants to create an account, this person has to have the deltachat app on the phone, then click on the link provided inside the webpage.

I wonder how stressful such a service would be to the server and if it could in any way be detrimental to Disroot's regular email service, in particular regarding the reputation of the domain, because the potentially high volume of email messages that would be sent because of chatmail might perhaps lead to e.g. blacklisting by individual other email services or even cause it to be included on central blacklists.

Apart from that, I do want to add that it might be a better use of time to focus the attention on making the current IM solution a stable one, before thinking about starting up another one.

I agree with GitUpAh, adding new services while old ones aren't stable adds to the effort necessary to maintain the entire service collection in good shape.

I do agree but the chatmail service is in a way partly solution to some other issues.
Chatmail only allows encrypted messages being sent so it limits the abuse possibilities as it would be used mainly for chatting so typical spam is not going to be utilizing this tool. However it will help people who do use deltachat not hit rate limit opposed on disroot.org mail server which is there in place to prevent spam. So the solution would be to provide dedicated server for deltachat users to improve their experience (mainly rate limit issue and mixing of regular emails and chats in one account).

I do see the potential issue of an extra resources and time/labor for maintenance. I have not look into the details of hosting deltachat server, but if it's a strip-down mail server stack, it's quite possible it's one of set and forget type of solutions. What I would do for sure to prevent any domain reputation is using subdomain or even just disr.it subdomain and separate ip address to make sure things are isolated from one another.

That said, given the recent workloads and fact me and @meaz are now busy with ton of housekeeping/cleanup job, I dont think adding the service in near future is possible (unless as a fun project and unless it's easy to spin it up and maintain). I think until we are done with all the current work, and migrate our mail server to recent dovecot, I would not touch the deltachat anyway.
