.I agree about forbidding username with dots
i'm not that confident with that idea.
first of all, what about all users that setup username in the past with a dot?
second surname.lastname@example.tld is a very very common style for mail, that probably more users care about.
is there a technical solution possible, like:
if user.user login @fe.disroot via ldap user-user@fe.disroot.org gets created/used as username for that service. (if free)
of course there's a corner case...
I am testing idea of replacing dot with dash for existing users, but since this is the possible issue in long run, I dont see why not replace dots with dashes for all future users. This solves possible issues with activity pub applications.
btw. there is an open issue on mastdon about this https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/13986
opened two years ago, and not much activity!
We have decided to temporarily disable dots in userames until we find proper future proof solution.
