Below is the concept draft proposal for formula to secure funding to pay out salary to the core team members.

Most important thing is, we pay out salaries only from funds secured a year prior.

Advantages are:

  • We avoid financial insecurity for core team member who is on the payroll since the amount of salary is secured upfront, and time for which the contract is created at a time cannot exceed 12 months (giving member in best case scenario guaranteed 12 month salary payment) and is known from the beginning.

  • It's more predictable from the perspective of the project as we pay out only what we have already currently secured excluding all other budgets such as hardware/maintenance, legal aid etc. The project only worry about securing funds for upcoming year rather then trying to find money to cover current costs of operation.

  • Finally it makes it easier to raise funds and communicate back to disrooters as we can see how much money we have and how much money we would have to still raise to reach goals for next year. Allows us to have better understanding and image of current financial state and how much money we would need to raise (through fundraising but also possible grants etc).

There is number of variables we need to take in consideration when discussing the budget for salaries each year:

  • Amount of funds secured
  • Number of core team members we can pay the salary to
  • Time of the contract
    We should look into those variables in the beginning or the year, set a plan for the funding, or see whether we can put any of the core members on the salary for a year (or any other amount of time not exceeding 12 months, unless we have enough funds for more of course).

So, first thing we should check is how much the organization can and is authorized to pay, right?

@Fede
i think as long as the salary does not exceed the value of what is paid for a comparable job in the industry, it should not be a problem. as a reference, you could use pay scales from unions. but we will not be able to pay out that much anyhow :)
but we should check if there are documentation obligations. for example, how many hours one have worked.

the end of the coming, it would be nice to start having some of @muppeth "variables" answered, like how much have we secured so far. I think we should plan this before the end of the year so that we can paying in the beginning of 2024. Otherwise, we will postpone it forever.

Can't we close this as we have agreed upon the salary for this year?
