Deleting a branch is permanent. Although the deleted branch may continue to exist for a short time before it actually gets removed, it CANNOT be undone in most cases. Continue?
As we got another request for EteSync, I am creating this issue to discuss the matter.
This service does not appear to be FOSS. I could be wrong, of course.
@Shadowstreik check https://www.etesync.com/
As for the matter, well, though I know that this encrypted, so nice, it really seems like a doublon of Nextcloud...
I'm still unsure about it. They have a pricing area which looks suspicious to some extent. Once I saw the different tiers, I stopped any further research.
@Shadowstreik That pricing is for their instance. So the service they offered is paid, but the software is FOSS and you can host it on your own server. Similar to what nextcloud or cryptpad does.
@meaz Yes its totally the same as what nextcloud offers via DAV based services. But yeah the end to end encryption is a good feature.
Once we talked about making a set, sort of package of services with only end to end encryption. Either similar to what we did during COVID, or under different domain. Would be interesting to provide services where end to end crypto is riding on the driver's sit.
I know a couple of disrooters who use (and told me nice things about) this service. Although I don't have a formed opinion about it.
I admit that I became interested in trying EteSync (and even EteSync Notes) since I've found out about this project, but didn't managed to do this until now.
However, since maintaining to many services might become counterproductive, I can only wait for your official decision (as maintainers).
@muppeth I think it would be beneficial to run both Etesync and Nextcloud (which is actually sabredav), but encourage users to use Etesync whenever possible. It's as easy as running a Docker image (the creator of the linked project has been praised by EteSync's main developer for being trustworthy).
There have been several discussions in privacy-focused forums, questioning Disroot's trustworthiness, mainly because encryption is not used (especially for emails, but the point remains), running encrypted services like this one would help regain people's trust in this awesome project.
@unrooted thanks for the input. I would not do it just 'cause someone somehwere challenges our trustworthiness :)
As for running the service, deploying it is the easiest bit so this isn't a challange. We need to think in which form to do it, if the entire team is agreeing with it and if we have resources to run, maintain and support the service. It's definitely something I will bring up on the upcoming core team monthly meeting to get team's opinion on this (or agreement and work plan).
@muppeth I am adding this to the milestone so that we can discuss about during meeting.
