Modern approach to discussion forums.
Discourse is written from scratch, fully open-source modern approach to discussion forums. It offers everything your community, group or collective needs to create their communication platform, both public and private. It also gives possibility for individuals to create topics on subjects of their interest and find others to discuss it with, or simply join already existing community.
Discourse is the 100% open source discussion platform built for the next decade of the Internet.
It works as:
- a mailing list
- a discussion forum
- a long-form chat room

# Mailing list and forum in one
Apart from forum, Discourse can be also used as a mailing-list. This solves the eternal fight between advocates of either option in your community and let's everyone enjoy communicating with each other in the way they think is best. You can start new topics and reply by sending an email, or use the web interface.
# Mobile friendly interface
Discourse was designed for high resolution touch devices, with a built in mobile layout. No need for an external apps. You will always run the latest version of discourse since you do not need to manually update it yourself.
# Public vs. private groups
You can start public or private forum groups that are self moderated. As a group administrator you will be able to manage who will participate in your forum group.

# User Interface:
Discourse UI is not only beautiful but also practical:
- Dynamic notifications will give you heads up whenever someone replies to your post, quotes you or mentiones your name, and if you aren't online, you'll get a notification via email.
- No more discussions that are split into pages, the thread reveals while you scroll down.
- Reply while you still read. With split screen you can still read other replies or threads, and dynamically add quotes, links and references.
- Real time updates. If a topic changes while you are reading or responding to it, or new replies arrive, it will update automatically.
# Search that actually works
Search from any page just start typing and get results instantly as you type. Advanced search options for power users, too.

# Decentralized and federated Chat protocol
Communicate with your friends using a standardized, open and federated chat protocol with the ability to encrypt your communication. Matrix is a network of servers providing chat, video/audio calls and other interations for thousands of people across multiple servers. Just like XMPP, with matrix you are not bound to one service provider, contrary to services such as whatsapp, skype, signal, slack and many others. In fact, the main idea behind matrix is to create platform where all people can communicate with each other regardless to their communicator of choice.

# Bridges
One of the most awesome feature of matrix is its bridges. Bridges establish connection between other chat systems and bring them all together into one room, so that people can intercommunicate with one another while using their chat app of choice. Currently supported bridges on Disroot are: IRC, Slack and Gitter. There is more to come so keep your eyes open for announcements: https://matrix.org/docs/projects/try-matrix-now.html#application-service

# CLIENTS
Since matrix is only a protocol, it needs clients (apps) to be able to communicate with users. There is plenty of clients already available and more to come. The main, most feature rich client recommended by Disroot is "RIOT".

- Data compressed and encrypted in the browser before sending to server. Uses 256 bits AES.Server has zero knowledge of data being stored.
- Your data is safe even in case of server breach or seizure.
- Search engines are blind regarding paste content.
- Discussion is of course also encrypted/decrypted in the browser.
- Server cannot see comments content or nicknames.
- With paste expiration, you can have ad-hoc short-lived discussion which will disappear in the void after expiration. This will leave no trace of your discussions in your email boxes.
- Discussions cannot be indexed by search engines. Period.

## TIPS:
1. Go to Preferences and select the search engines you want to use or block with your queries.
2. In search engine list in your preferences you will see also shortcuts. You can use them in your search queries to see only results of a specific search engine.
For example searching !tpb linux distro will query the Pirate Bay for Linux distro. This will include amount of seeders and lechers and supply you with a magnet link directly.
3. If you want to add search.disroot.org to your Firefox please click the button on top of the page.

- Searx may not offer you as personalized results as Google, but it doesn't generate a profile about you.
- Searx doesn't care about what you search for, never shares anything with a third party, and it can't be used to compromise your data.
- Searx is free software, the code is 100% open and you can help to make it better. See more on github.

# Technical details - How does it work?
---
Searx is a metasearch engine, inspired by the Seeks project.
It provides basic privacy by mixing your queries with searches on other platforms without storing search data.
Queries are made using a POST request on every browser (except chrome*). Therefore they show up in neither our logs, nor your URL history.
In case of Chrome* users there is an exception, Searx uses the search bar to perform GET requests.
Searx can be added to your browser's search bar; moreover, it can be set as the default search engine.
