jmp.chat calling and texting works great and is libre, but using current xmpp clients makes it a bit cumbersome to:

  • Add a contact (phone number)
  • Make and receive a calls from desktop
  • Dial without adding a contact first

which are common things to do when working with phone numbers.

Conversations on android works particularly well. In my experience all the desktop clients are a bit buggy, especially with calling. Movim also works well, but is a bit over-featured with its social media functionality.

Making the user experience tighter here would make libre calling and texting excellent and would open up opportunities to the public.
