    Channels Stable

badrihippo released this 2024-10-28 14:36:39 +01:00 | 4 commits to master since this release

Behold the first official release, with group chat support and an OmniSD installable build! You can now browse and join (already-bookmarked) group chats to your heart's content. Hopefully, you will also see this release in the BananaHackers Store soon, for easy installation. Update: Convo is now published on BananaHackers! You can visit the store to install it.

Automatically joining group chats was previously disabled because a flood of messages tends to freeze the app and sometimes even cause a crash. Now you have the option of selectively picking and choosing which group chats to join.

    Changes since v0.1.0-pre1

    • Add support for joining (existing, bookmarked) group chats - #11
    • (Re)enable incoming messages from non-roster contacts - ca70510a76
    • Stop autocapitalising headings even when they're supposed to be lowercase - e4f7519b17
    • Disable printing of debug XMPP stanzas, to hopefully save some compute power and/or memory. Instructions have been added on how to re-enable this for development - adebbf0025
    • Package for OmniSD and the Banana Hackers store (this was done manually; there are no commits...yet)

    Installation notes

Update: Convo is now on the BananaHackers WebStore, so if you have that on your device you can just get Convo from there.

The attached convo-0.1.0-kaios2-omnisd.zip file is packaged for OmniSD. You can download it to your KaiOS 2 device, let it be automatically detected by OmniSD, and install it from there. This will be the standard packaging format going forward.

If you want to continue installing the "manual" way, you can unzip the same file to find an application.zip inside. This application.zip contains the files in the format expected by tools like kaiosrt and gdeploy, so you can extract that as well and proceed as you normally do.

    Colophon: Channels

"Channels" are a commonly used term for public group chats in various messaging apps. These could be either one-way broadcasting channels, where many users follow announcements from a single group or individual, or they could be open groups for public discussion.

This release of Convo allows both private and public group chats (although they will have to all be unencrypted for the time being).
