**Disroot** is a project based in Amsterdam which is maintained by volunteers and depends on the support of its community.
We originally created **Disroot** out of personal need, we were looking for software we could use to communicate, share and organize within our circles. Most of the available solutions were missing the key elements that we find important; Our tools should be **open**, **decentralized**, **federated** and **respectful** towards **freedom** and **privacy**.
While searching for such tools, we found some really interesting projects, projects that we believe should be available to anyone who values similar principals. We therefore decided to bundle some applications together and share them with others. This is how **Disroot** got started.
By running **Disroot** we hope to change how people typically interact on the web. We want to encourage people to **break free** of the walled gardens of popular software and turn to open and ethical alternatives, may it be on our platform or on another (or you could even host your own).
Together we can form a network that is truly independent, focused on the benefit of the people rather than the exploitation thereof.

# Federation and Decentralization
![](about-organize.jpg)
---
Most internet services are run from centralized point owned and run by corporations. These store private data of their users and analyze it using advanced algorithms in order to create accurate profiles of their 'users'. This information is often used to exploit the people for the sake of advertisers. Information can also be obtained by governmental institutions or by malicious hackers. Data can be removed without warning due to dubious reasons or regional censorship policies.
A decentralized service can reside on multiple machines, owned by different individuals, companies or organization. With federation protocols those instances can interact and form one network of many nodes (servers hosting similar services). One might be able to shut down one node but never the entire network. In such a setup censorship is practically impossible.
Think of how we use E-mail; you can choose any service provider or set up your own, and still exchange emails with people using another email provider. E-mail is built upon a decentralized and federated protocol.
These two principals, together, sets up the backdrop for a huge network that depends on a rather simple infrastructure and relatively low costs. Any machine can become a server and be an equal participant in the network. From a small desktop computer at your home to a dedicated server or racks with multiple servers. This approach provides the possibility to create the biggest user owned global network - just as the Internet was intended to be.
We do not wish for **Disroot** to become one centralized entity but rather a part of a larger community - one node out of many. We hope others will be inspired to create more projects with similar intentions.

Software can be created and shaped into anything. Every button, every color and every link that we see and use on the web was put there by someone. When we use the applications provided for us, we mostly don't see - and sometimes don't care about - much of what happens behind the interface we use. We connect with other people, we store our files, organize meetings and festivals, send emails or chat for hours and it all happens magically.
In the last few decades information has become very valuable and more and more easy to collect and process. We are accustomed to being analyzed, blindly accepting terms and conditions for "our own good", trusting authorities and multi-billion dollar companies to protect our interest, while all along we are the product in their 'people farms'.
**Own your own data:**
Many networks use your data to make money by analyzing your interactions and using this information to advertise things to you. **Disroot** doesn't use your data for any purpose other than allowing you to connect and use the service.
Your files on the cloud are encrypted with your user password, every bin-paste and file uploaded on **Lufi** service is client side encrypted too, meaning that even server administrators have no access to your data. Whenever there is a possibility for encryption, we enable it and if it's not possible, we advice to use external encryption software. The less we, as admins, know about your data, the better :D. (Tip of the day: *Never lose your password!*) [Check this tutorial](https://howto.disroot.org/en/tutorials/user/account/ussc)

# Transparency and openness
At **Disroot** we use 100% free and open source software. This means that the source code (the way the software operates) is publicly accessible. Anyone is able to contribute improvements or adjustments to the software and it can be audited and controlled at any moment - no hidden back-doors or other malicious malware.
We want to be fully transparent and open towards people using our services and therefor we publish information about the current state of the project, the financial status, our plans and ideas. We would also like to hear your suggestions and feedback so we can deliver the best experience possible to all **Disrooters**.
An email alias is simply a forwarding email address.
More aliases are available for our regular supporters. By regular supporters we think of those who contribute the equivalent of at least one cup of coffee a month. It is not that we are promoting coffee, on the contrary - coffee is actually quite the symbol for [exploitation](http://thesourcefilm.com/) and [inequality](http://www.foodispower.org/coffee/) so we thought that it is a good way to let people measure themselves how much they can give.
We found this [list of coffee cup prices](https://www.caffesociety.co.uk/blog/the-cheapest-cities-in-the-world-for-a-cup-of-coffee) around the world, it might not be very accurate, but it gives a good indication of the different fares. Please take time to consider your contribution. If you can 'buy' us one cup of Rio De Janeiro coffee a month that's OK, but If you can afford a Double Decaf Soy Frappuccino With An Extra Shot And Cream a month, then you can really help us keep the **Disroot** platform running and make sure it is available for free for other people with less means.
To request aliases you need to fill in this [form](https://disroot.org/en/forms/alias-request-form).
If you would like to use your own domain use this [form](https://disroot.org/en/forms/domain-linking-form).
For information on howto to setup your new email aliases check our [howto section](https://howto.disroot.org/en/tutorials/email/alias).

## What is encryption
---
Encryption is when you change data with a special encoding process so that the data becomes unrecognizable (it's encrypted). You can then apply a special decoding process and you will get the original data back. By keeping the decoding process a secret, nobody else can recover the original data from the encrypted data.

![webmail](en/webmail.png)
---
You can access your mail from any devices by using our webmail at [https://mail.disroot.org](https://mail.disroot.org)
Our webmail is powered by **RainLoop**. Rainloop is a modern approach to webmail. It's simple, fast and provides most of the features one could expect from webmail:

Themes: Select your background picture.

Threads: Display conversations in a threaded mode.

Translations: The interface is being translated to many languages

Filters: Set up rules to automatically move or copy email to specific folders, forward or reject emails.

Folders: Manage your folders (add, remove, or hide).

GPG Encryption: The RainLoop web-client offers built in encryption option.

Contacts: you can add your contacts and even link your Nextcloud contacts directly into the webmail.

**NOTE**: *Please be aware that this is a server side encryption, which means you don't have control on your secret key. This is not as safe as using desktop email client, such as Thunderbird, with local encryption. But then again, it is better than not using any encryption at all...*

## E-mail
**Disroot** provides secure email accounts for your desktop client or via a web interface. The communication between you and the mail server is encrypted with SSL, providing as much privacy as possible. Furthermore, all the emails being sent out from our server are encrypted as well (TLS) if the recipients email server supports it. This means that emails are no longer sent as traditional "postcard", but are actually put in an "envelope".
**Nevertheless, we encourage you to always be cautious when using email communication, and to make use of GPG end-to-end encryption to ensure your correspondence is as private as can be.**

## End-to-End Encryption
**Nextcloud End-to-End encryption** offers the ultimate protection for your data. **Nextcloud**'s E2E encryption plugin enables users to pick one or more folders on their desktop or mobile client to be encrypted using End-to-End encryption. Folders can be shared with other users and synced between devices but are not readable on the server side.
Read more about it at [https://nextcloud.com/endtoend/](https://nextcloud.com/endtoend/)
**End-to-end encryption is still in alpha state, don't use this in production and only with test data!**
### ATTENTION!
Currently, Nextcloud end-to-end encryption is disabled on Disroot. It is due to a long standing bug with Nextcloud desktop app.
Read about those issues:
[Can't revoke keys](https://github.com/nextcloud/end_to_end_encryption/issues/32)
[Directory structure is leaked](https://github.com/nextcloud/end_to_end_encryption/issues/94)

## Encryption:
All your files that are stored on the **Disroot** cloud are encrypted with encryption keys generated from your password. No-one, not even system administrators can see the content of your files. The administrators can only see the file's name, its size and its mime-type (what kind of file it is: video, text, etc).
###### !!! IMPORTANT WARNING !!!
**In case you forget your password you won't be able to recover your files unless you have selected "Password recovery option" in your "Personal" settings. This however means that you give admins a general permission to access your files. The safest way is to never loose your password and always have your files backed up elsewhere.**
*Please refer to [this](https://howto.disroot.org/en/tutorials/user/account/ussc) tutorial.*
**Nextcloud** uses only server side encryption. This means your encryption key pair (private and public) are stored on the server and are vulnerable to bruteforce attacks or MITM (man in the middle attacks) in case the server is compromised or confiscated.

No more discussions that are split into pages, the thread reveals while you scroll down.

Reply while you still read. With split screen you can still read other replies or threads, and dynamically add quotes, links and references.

# XMPP
### Decentralized and Federated Instant Messaging
Communicate using a standardized, open and federated chat protocol, with the ability to encrypt your communication with OMEMO protocol (based on encryption method also used by services such as Signal and Matrix). With XMPP you are not bound to one service provider (e.g. Disroot server) but can freely communicate with contacts from other Jabber [servers](https://compliance.conversations.im/), just like you would communicate between different email servers.

## How does it work?
Drag and drop files in the appropriate area or use the traditional way to browse and select files and the files will be chunked, encrypted and sent to the server. You will get two links per file: a download link, that you give to the people you want to share the file with and a deletion link, allowing you to delete the file when you want.
You can see the list of your files by clicking on the *"My files"* link at the top right of that page.
You don't need to register yourself to upload files.

## Lufi - Encrypted temporary file upload service
Disroot's Upload service is a file hosting software, powered by **Lufi**. It temporarily stores files so you can share them with others using a link.
To protect privacy, all the files are encrypted in the browser itself - It means that your files never leave your computer unencrypted. The administrators will not be able to see the content of your file, nor will your network administrator or your ISP. The administrators can only see the file's name, its size and its mimetype (what kind of file it is: video, text, etc).

# How does it work?
**Searx** does not keep or create index of the webistes by itself. When you type your query into the search box, **Searx** relays this query to a number of other search engines like Google, DuckDuckGo, Bing, etc., and returns results from those engines back to you in aggregated form.
**Searx** may not offer you as personalized results as Google, but that's because it doesn't generate a profile about you nor it shares any personal details about you, your location, or computer with any of the search engines it relays your queries to. This offers much better privacy and acts as a 'shield' from the big, corporate engines spying on you.
You can see [here](https://search.disroot.org/preferences) what search engines can be used to get results on a request.
