Like [last week]({% post_url 2022-12-25-review-2022 %}) followed my now-tradition of looking back on the year, on this blog, I try to pick the first Sunday of the year to look forward at the upcoming year.

As [discussed previously]({% post_url 2019-12-31-new-year %}), on Fridays, I present my weekly social media roundups. Note that toots of articles generally include header images from the articles, which I don't include here unless their creators *happen* to have released them for use under a free license, and I notice. Most have not, or I don't notice. But I now add my commentary here, where I don't feel restricted by message length.
Starting this week, as promised---or threatened---over the last couple of weeks, I now post primarily to Mastodon, with any interactions on Twitter now either coming from bots or replying to people contacting me. Therefore, the posts now refer to "toots," and the links within them point you to the Mastodon versions of everything. And in cases where the article might hit a nerve in some, I added a content warning.

Today kicks off [Hōonkō](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H%C5%8Donk%C5%8D) in most Jōdo Shinshū Buddhist communities, celebrating the tradition's founder. It seems to stand in opposition to the theory that early winter and near-longest-night holidays make for large raucous gatherings with plenty of food to metaphorically fight back the darkness and cold.

While the organization behind the holiday doesn't have the best history---The World League for Freedom and Democracy began as the World Anti-Communist League, and the change in name stems from the {% sfx ahem %} change in management in China---but [World Freedom Day](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_League_for_Freedom_and_Democracy#World_Freedom_Day) celebrates the return of prisoners of the Korean War. Part of me wants to appropriate it for something else, like a broader call for releasing prisoners of war...
Also, [Chinese New Year](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_New_Year) happened yesterday, kicking off the spring festival, so a happy new year to anyone celebrating it or the various new year celebrations derived from it. 🐇🐈 It takes two weeks, though, so it feels unfair to grab it as a holiday unless I happen to land on the actual new year.

Today, people around the world celebrate [World Radio Day](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Radio_Day), honoring broadcast radio.

Yesterday marked [Año Nuevo Mexicano](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aztec_New_Year), the Aztec New Year, still celebrated by some Nahua communities. Many apparently dispute the "actual" date equivalent on the Gregorian calendar, but I feel like I probably need to side with the people who have genuinely carried on the tradition.

Today marks the [International Day of Happiness](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Day_of_Happiness), a United Nations project to "make people around the world realize the importance of happiness within their lives."
