Happy new year! 🎉 And if you're on a different calendar, happy Friday!
As [discussed previously]({% post_url 2019-12-31-new-year %}), this is my weekly Twitter roundup. Note that tweets of articles generally include header images from the articles, which are not included here unless they *happen* to be available under a free license. Most are not. But I now add most of my commentary here, where I'm not restricted by the message length.

I wasn't about to stomp on the Friday [Twitter Roundup](/blog/tag/linkdump) or the [Free Culture Book Club](/blog/tag/bookclub), but I didn't want the new year to pass without establishing my "things to look forward to" post as an annual tradition. So, happy new year! 🎉 Again, unless you're on a different calendar.

Since we're still technically in "resolution that won't last to the end of the month" season, I wanted to take some time to talk about a good habit that provides more productive time and more willpower in a day: Sleep. It seemed especially worth talking about "sleep hygiene in a week when we've seen unpleasant violence and a complete inability of many people to take responsibility for their part in inciting it.

When I started **Entropy Arbitrage**, the one post I had (mostly) ready to go for a long time was [Social and Anti-Social Media]({% post_url 2019-12-20-social-media %}), mostly beating up on the major social media sites for their participation in "outrage feedback loops." That is, they refuse to moderate fascists and bigots, because fascists and bigots reliably make everyone (including themselves) angry and/or afraid. Anger and fear are easy emotions to provoke and maintain the attention of our "lizard brains," while also wearing down our critical thinking. With attention focused and little skepticism, we're more likely to pay attention to advertising. And advertising brings money in to fund the site.

Holidays are slim, today, so we're talking about the anniversary of the end of [Nellie Bly](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nellie_Bly)'s trip around the world, which happens to also be a good excuse to celebrate a pioneering journalist and eventually became one of her era's most progressive business leaders, after inheriting a steel company, and *possibly* even designed the 55-gallon drum still widely used today. Even if she didn't, she definitely designed other steel containers, but they haven't survived as long.

As a quick word of warning and disclaimer, we're going to be talking today about a franchise that is decidedly *not* Free Culture, though certain aspects are in the public domain. As with the [*Star Trek*](/blog/tag/startrek/) posts, my comments and analysis are under the blog's CC-BY-SA license; Superman and related properties are not, and this isn't anything like an attack on the relevant trademarks. However, unlike talking about *Star Trek*, any media or excerpts should be from public domain sources.
That out of the way, I wish I had written this post for last Sunday, to sneak in at the end of Black History Month, but the [Equality Act discourse]({% post_url 2021-02-28-genders %}) seemed more important than the [news <i class="far fa-copyright"></i>](https://www.rollingstone.com/movies/movie-news/ta-nehisi-coates-superman-movie-1134375/) that Ta-Nehisi Coates has been hired to write a Superman movie. On the other hand, the idea that Black history gets contained to the shortest month of the year (as if it isn't general history, as well) has always been dumb, and the week gave me time to do additional research.

Today is the [International Day Against Police Brutality](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Day_Against_Police_Brutality). After a year of [Black Lives Matter protests](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Floyd_protests), the response has been...let's call it "uneven." Some jurisdictions have begun the monumental task of reforming their police forces. Other jurisdictions have been attempting to [ban offending police officers or deny funding to police forces](https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/recorddocuments/bill/21RS/sb211/orig_bill.pdf).

As a quick content advisory for the post, I'm going to *try* to minimize it, but we're talking about the shootings during the week that have been in the news, and---as the title suggests---about the problems with the representation of Asian women in media.
If you'd prefer to not deal with that, feel free to pretend that this post was a belated celebration of [Norwuz](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nowruz)---as a connoisseur of holidays, I'd call it one of the best holidays that most of the world ignores---and [Women's History Month](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women%27s_History_Month), and move on. The bullet points beneath the header image should be safe, though. Happy Norwuz!

If it seems like my routine programming has been a bit thin---I believe I checked in a script, recently, where I only changed a constant that nobody but me will ever notice, *just* to have committed things---it's because a fair amount of my time has gone to a project that I believe I'll be announcing in the next week or...let's say three, just in case.
Regardless, I spent a day or two on rigging up a dark mode for the site.

I'll link to the abuses, but won't discuss them in depth. It's perfectly understandable---especially if you've been directly affected by those issues---if you need to prepare yourself before reading, or if you would rather skip this completely.
Honestly, though, a lot of the principles involved in this argument apply more widely, so I think that it's worth talking about.

You've no doubt noticed, over the last few months, that cryptocurrencies like [bitcoin](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitcoin) have been increasingly creeping into the news, whether that's the [enormous cost of mining](https://www.ofnumbers.com/2018/08/26/HOW-MUCH-ELECTRICITY-IS-CONSUMED-BY-BITCOIN-BITCOIN-CASH-ETHEREUM-LITECOIN-AND-MONERO/), companies [inserting their own currency](https://pappp.net/?p=39868) in products, [non-fungible tokens](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-fungible_token) being treated like news, the [volatility in the market](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1544612319309274), or the people seemingly getting interviewed so that they can push the [cryptoasset](https://fee.org/articles/three-key-differences-between-traditional-and-cryptoasset-markets/) rebranding so that people will stop asking silly questions about environmental cost, creation, and volatility. And...look, I'll be honest, here. People treat this stuff like it's magic, and nothing could be further from the truth. So, I wanted to cook up something in straightforward English---or as close as I ever get to straightforward English---so that people don't get lost in the details or are forced to assume that they're missing something.

Today is the [International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Day_Against_Homophobia,_Transphobia_and_Biphobia), which...well, I suppose that the verbose name of the day is *probably* self-explanatory. Less obvious is that it commemorates the World Health Organization finally removing homosexuality from the [International Classification of Diseases](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Classification_of_Diseases) in 1990. Given that authoritarian legislators have been pushing meaningless bills to [enable discrimination against gender and sexual minorities](https://theconversation.com/anti-transgender-bills-are-latest-version-of-conservatives-longtime-strategy-to-rally-their-base-158296), this seems like a good year to speak out against that sort of hatred and fear-mongering.
