Toots for the Week of October 23rd, 2023 /blog/assets/CLM_14456_71r_detail.png This week, we have transwomen in Pakistan, a Navajo Congressional candidate, the opioid epidemic, tau particles, junk fees, regulation, and quotes. Transwomen Hitopadesa Nez Publius Syrus true

As [discussed previously]({% post_url 2019-12-31-new-year %}), on Fridays, I present my weekly social media roundups. Note that toots of articles generally include header images from the articles, which I don't include here unless their creators happen to have released them for use under a free license, and I notice. Most have not, or I don't notice. But I now add my commentary here, where I don't feel restricted by message length.

Also, I don't generally attach pictures to posts with quotations.

Transwomen in Pakistan reclaim their ancestral heritage from Global Voices

However, after months of campaigning by conservative religious groups and political parties, Pakistans top religious court overturned salient features of this law in May 2023, stating that trans people were endangering the Islamic way of life.

This article covers a lot more ground than I can cover in an excerpt and a summary. Go read it.

The man who neither gives in charity nor enjoys his wealth, which every day increases, breathes, indeed, like the bellows of a smith, but cannot be said to live.

Former Navajo Nation president announces his candidacy for Arizona's 2nd Congressional District from Daily Kos

Nez said he believes voters care less about which party holds the seat than whether their representatives are taking concrete action to improve their lives.

I don't have much to say other than "good luck to him."

The measure of a man's life is the well spending of it, and not the length.

After Purdue Pharma lawsuit, competitors swooped in from Futurity

The authors found that the increase in competitor spending occurred regardless of whether prescribers counties were above or below the national median in terms of opioid overdose deaths per capita.

The study pitches this as a story of unintended consequences of stopping Purdue, and not of corporate greed requiring regulation to keep it in check.

But without the chaotic fireworks produced by head-on collisions, these near-miss events are far quieter and ideal for measuring traits of the elusive tau.

While I wouldn't consider this one of the most important stories of the week, I do find it interesting.

Lets Trash Junk Fees from OtherWords

The Bureau is now working to eliminate fees on basic information services, like providing account balances, and making it easier for consumers to switch banks.

Since the post makes a point to mention credit unions as an alternative to this nonsense, I'll echo that endorsement. I switched over to the local credit union over a decade ago, and can only honestly complain that I didn't think to do so sooner.

Bonus

Because it accidentally became a tradition early on in the life of the blog, I drop any additional articles that didn't fit into the one-article-per-day week, but too weird or important to not mention, here.

An interoperability rule for your money from Pluralistic

So if you tell your bank to give your data to a competitor or a comparison shopping site it will have to do so...or else.

Yes, this goes into different aspects of the same rule as the Friday article. It seemed warranted.

If you appreciate this sort of content, then you should probably follow me on Mastodon to get it as early as possible...and feel free to reply, at least to the good stuff.
