For those upgrading: you must run update-distcc-symlinks on every server machine, and add manually (see MASQUERADING of distcc(1)) those compilers it does not detect.
Performing substitutions during post-patch breaks tools such as mkpatches,
making it very difficult to regenerate correct patches after making changes,
and often leading to substituted string replacements being committed.
