The last two weeks had some amazing surprises and developments. It was absolutely and positively motivating for us.
**1. Disroot app**
Many people have been asking for Disroot mobile app and we repeatedly failed to see the possibility of such app since we run multitude of services that, in most cases, provide their own separate app. Massimiliano was the one who actually saw the potential of a Disroot app and decided to take the challenge with an unexpected approach. He developed the Disroot "Swiss army knife" app that helps and guides disrooters to recommended apps, tips and tutorials on how to set everything up. The app will pick the best (in our opinion) app for email, chat, etc and for those services that do not have a dedicated app it will open them in the webview window. The app also provides directions to all community tutorials we've gathered over the years to help people use provided services. We are very thankful to Massimiliano for his brilliant idea and the hard work he put into it. The app is available from the one and only truly Free/Libre Android store: [here](https://f-droid.org/en/packages/org.disroot.disrootapp/)
**2. Changing notification email and Screen Name**
This is something we wanted to do since a while now and we finally managed. Since not everyone uses their Disroot email, and we in no way want to force people to do so, we wanted to make it possible for disrooters to use their email address of choice for all incoming notifications from services provided by the Disroot platform. As of today, you can login to [https://user.disroot.org](https://user.disroot.org) and update your profile with new notification email and also Screen Name.
At this moment only Nextcloud is configured to accept the changes. Once you update your profile, Nextcloud will be sending your notification emails to the given address. \o/
!Note! Due to a bug in nextcloud software although your screen name won't change for you on the interface on Nextcloud, your new name will be shown to people you share files with, calendars etc. We hope this will be solved soon.
As time progresses and we test other services we will be adding those too.
**2. Registration issue.**
Last two weeks we spent on thinking how to solve the issue of registrations. We've had few brainstorm sessions, some open discussions eg. [here](https://forum.disroot.org/t/how-to-solve-the-abuse-problem-on-disroot-org-platform/4229/23) and countless private talks, chats, etc. The outcome of all the discussions is satisfying and, most importantly, brings a possible solution to the problem. We will be busy with that in the next two weeks and hopefully we will re-open registrations soon after.
**3. New donation page.**
Last weeks Antilopa was busy punching all the numbers from all over the place (Paypal, Patreon, bank etc) into new accounting system that will help us have better overview on the current situation, the amount of donations we receive and our current costs. We still cant believe the outcome and are still recalculating it over and over. The result makes us very happy and we would like to thank everyone who decided to chip in and donate money to our project until now. But please don't quit with satisfaction yet - for long term sustainability we need you to keep this trend. As the platform grows so do the costs and the amount of work we invest in it.
The new [donation page](https://disroot.org/en/donate) has more detailed information and hope to be as transparent as can be. We will be updating it each month as we do our administration. In the new donation page we will regularly put our short and and long term goals for the project. At the moment we are still experimenting with the idea, so more goals will show up later (including eventually the ultimate goal and dream to be able to work fully on Disroot and quit our day jobs..)
For now we have accomplished one goal we wanted to share with you:
**Goal 1 - Donate to projects - Unlocked.**
We heavily depend on people creating the amazing software we provide to you every day. Without the hard work of those developers there would be no Disroot. It's therefore logical to support these people and projects financially as much as we can, and to help build a self sustainable model for libre/open source software.
As of next month we have decided to donate on regular basis to the projects listed below according to this formula:
As long as the donations we receive double our costs we will share 15% of our surplus with developers of software we use to provide disroot services.
At the moment we are considering donating to the following projects: Diaspora, Taiga, Nextcloud, Conversejs, Etherpad, Ethercalc, Privatebin, Lufi, Searx and Framasoft
All this is made possible by your generous donations! We are very grateful to everyone that decided to keep buying us a coffee. Make the donations flowing :) We are very thirsty for caffeine. :P
The next two weeks we will probably spend most of our time on implementing the new registration system to get back up on our feet. Additionally we will work on small improvements here and there and maybe play and experiment with something new for a change.
Ciao!
**PS.**
PS. This summer, we have upgraded our password store policy. We therefor would like to recommend you to update your password (even to the same one if you will). Once updated it will be stored in more secure way then before. You can do that by logging in to [https://user.disroot.org](https://user.disroot.org) and select "Change password" option. If you are changing to new password (which we recommend you do periodically anyway), please follow these instructions, specially when you use Nextcloud files: [https://howto.disroot.org/en/basics/how-to-change-your-disroot-user-password](https://howto.disroot.org/en/basics/how-to-change-your-disroot-user-password)

And so the journey continues. **4th of August** marked the fourth year of **Disroot**'s existance. The little project we created, due to our need for open tools, has now become a full blown platform. This year, although it seemed quiet, has been very busy actually. We have managed to accomplish a lot, but also experienced some throwbacks, shortcomings and lots of issues to deal with. All those experiences are improving the way we work and interact with the platform. It looks like the fun has just begun.
So lets start from short recap of what happened this year so far.
The biggest and, in fact, most recent news is that our team has grown. In June we have welcomed few Disrooters who have been helping us out already for a very long time. Making it official was a natural next step in recognizing their work on the project. This also enabled us to spread more tasks among all of us and to develop new ways of coordinating the work (the team is currently covering both hemispheres so we need to use all **Disroot** has to offer to communicate, meet, coordinate). It's still all new to us and we are still in evaluation period, but we would like to introduce the new members to all Disrooters: **Fede**, **Meaz**, **Maryjane** and **Massimiliano** which some of you already know from their contributions, together with **Muppeth** and **Antilopa** are now the part of the new **Disroot Core Team**.
The big chunk of the first and second quarter of the year we have spent on performance improvements, fighting bugs and spam, cleaning up the entire platform setup and other dirty work no one wants to do usually. Due to high workload last year, we had a lot of things "duct taped" together in order to meet the growing expectations with limited resources. This, of course, cannot go on forever, The more things are patched together "just for now", the bigger the mess. We have worked (and continue to do so to this day) to work out permanent solutions, document more things, create procedures and improve existing ones. Although we still keep working with 200% capacity, we realized that we need to spend more time on things no one likes doing but are essential for the well being of the project. We have spent time cleaning up and documenting the setup, and now with new members we are realizing how much procedures, documentation papers and work flow records we are missing: . At this moment this is our main focus. We know this investment will pay off in the near future when we start deploying new features and improving existing ones. One of the more prominent results of this work is the long awaited **Disroot's** [mission statement](https://disroot.org/en/mission-statement)
Last year we were very proud and excited about the fact we had managed to cover all the costs from the incoming donation stream. It was the first year where we, the admins, did not have to put any money from our own pocket to cover the costs. It was very important milestone which indicated we are on the good path to become an independent, self-sustained project. This trend continued this year, which allowed us to unlock a new goal. We are donating a portion of the donations surplus forward to the **Free (Libre) and Open Source** software without which **Disroot** as a platform wouldn't exist. Up until now **we have donated over 550 euros** to various projects. We hope those number will grow. For more details, please check our [donation page](https://disroot.org/donate)
**Disroot** has matured and grown quite a lot since last year. The amount of work it requires every day has and is growing with it. In order to continue with this great project, and the great ideas behind it, we need to turn **Disroot** into our day job. For us it has been pretty much a day (and night) job already for the past two years. But the situation where 24 hours needs to be split between all the projects, real dayjobs and a family cannot be sustainable in the long term and for sure isn't healthy. We know that reaching a financial situation where **Disroot** would become our main occupation is far ahead, but in order to get there we do need to keep walking forward. Dutch law allows for non-profits like ours to pay a volunteer fee no bigger than **1700 euro** a year per person. We would like to set this as a new goal. The idea behind is to be able to pay volunteer fee to at least one of our admins as a start, and if successful strive to include the entire Core team (one by one). If we can do this, we think nothing will stand in the way to make the last step into total self-sustainability of the project.
We believe this can be easily reached in a very simple way.
If you enjoy using our services, you're happy with a friendly community, quick and professional support, and the fact you can reach the Core Team in person and talk the night away, all it takes for this dream to come true for us, is if you reward our work with at least one cup of coffee you buy in your local coffee-shop once a month. If each Disrooter would do just that minimum, not only the entire staff could be on the payroll, we could donate big chunk of money on regular basis to all the Free and Open Source software projects we so much depend on and also keep investing in our hardware infrastructure without ever worrying about finances.
**Long live Disroot and long live all the Disrooters out there. You make all of this is possible. Without you, Disrooters, there would be no Disroot as we know it today. So go ahead and pat yourselves on the back too and enjoy this little enclave.**

As you might have noticed our cloud instance is slow and unstable at the moment. We are working together with Nextcloud developers as well as few other instances that are affected by what seems to be a bug, trying to find a root cause.
Hopefully soon we'll have a working fix and everything will go back to normal. However up until now, sleepless nights of last days did not produce any result yet.

First we'd like to start with the big news: **As of 3rd November Disroot is an official foundation!** This is an important milestone in Disroot's timeline and a validation of our commitment to the project.
This last month was extremely busy, perhaps our busiest so far, as we were preparing the system for these new features:
#### Aliases
Aliases are now available for our regular supporters. By regular supporters we think of those who contribute the equivalent of at least one cup of coffee a month.
It is not that we are promoting coffee, on the contrary - coffee is actually quite the symbol for [exploitation](http://thesourcefilm.com/) and [inequality](http://www.foodispower.org/coffee/) so we thought that it is a good way to let people measure themselves how much they can give.
We found this [list](https://www.caffesociety.co.uk/blog/the-cheapest-cities-in-the-world-for-a-cup-of-coffee) of coffee cup prices around the world, it might not be very accurate, but it gives a good indication of the different fares.
Please take time to consider your contribution. If you can 'buy' us one cup of Rio De Janeiro coffee a month that's OK, but If you can afford a Double Decaf Soy Frappuccino With An Extra Shot And Cream a month, then you can really help us keep the Disroot platform running and make sure it is available for free for other people with less means.
To request aliases you need to fill in this [form](https://disroot.org/forms/alias-request-form).
*If you already donated to Disroot in the past and would still like to get aliases please get in contact with us.*
For information on howto to setup your new email aliases check our [howto section](https://howto.disroot.org/email/identities)
#### Extra shorter email address
A little something to all Disrooters - our new short domain **disr.it** is now available to all. Each account has now a *username*@disr.it alias by default, that can be used as an extra email address. Follow the link above to learn how to set it up on your device or in the setting of the webmail.
#### Testing new conferencing system
As some of you know developers at matrix.org recently decided to utilize "meet jitsi" service to handle video conferences. As a preperation to later serving our own selfhosted solution for matrix users on our server, we have also deployed jitsi on Disroot. You can find it via [https://calls.disroot.org](https://calls.disroot.org). It's a very simple yet powerful video conference system that supports audio/video, chat and screen sharing without the need to create any account. We haven't officially added it to the list of the services but we are curious to read what you think about it and at the same time to test its resource footprint on our platform when widely used. So check it out, play with it and remember to let us know what you think about it.
#### Donations
Since Liberapay does not allow rewarding for donations - which means we are unfortunately unable to give out email aliases to people who support Disroot through Librepay - we have also started a Patreon page. You can find the information on that and other contribution options at [https://disroot.org/donate](https://disroot.org/donate).
We are also waiting to get the details of our new bank account, we will add the information to the donation page once we have it.
#### Upcoming sprint
The coming sprint will be our last sprint this year. Apart from releasing more cloud space and domain linking features we want to focus on our tutorial section. Lots of tutorials need updating and even more are waiting to be written. We therefor need help from all of you to contribute to tutorials and/or their translations. One of the first things we'll do is create a tutorial on how to submit contributions. We are also planning a major hardware upgrade in the coming weeks. We're going to migrate to a dedicated database server which should improve the overall performance of the platform.

Hi there Disrooters! We would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a great year. 2018 was packed with excitement and plenty of work here at Disroot, all about which you can read in our annual report. Make yourself some hot-coco, sit comfortable and read through **[the report!](https://disroot.org/annual_reports/AnnualReport2018.pdf)**
There are few additional announcements we would like to share:
**Communication**
Last year we decided to stop sending announcements on changes via email. This was because we found it both too intrusive and time consuming to do so. Especially so since we decided to change the way we work. Since September we are working in two-week sprints instead of the four-week long sprints we had before. We announce the developments via the blog and social media posts every two weeks. Planning on a bi-weekly basis gives us better control and overview. We can now better estimate the planned work load and not overload the sprint, what often led to sprints dragging well over 4 weeks, ruining our planning and weakening our control over the project.
Therefor we will do as follows:
- Every two weeks (more or less) we will publish a post with changes and plans for next sprint just like we did in the last quarter of the year.
- Every quarter of the year we will send out email announcement to all users with recap of work done in that period of time.
In this way we give detailed overview and insight for those who want to follow development of disroot in pretty much real time and for all others we provide general none intrusive overview every quarter of the year.
**Inactive matrix user purge:**
As we informed in [the blog post](https://disroot.org/en/blog/matrix-closure) form 7th September 2018, we have decided to phase out matrix. Few months ago we started denying access for new users as well as purging public room history longer then 4 months. Now it is time to enter the second phase of the process which is deactivating inactive users. We will roll this out in two steps.
1. Next week, we will deactivate all users that did not login for a whole year.
2. In first week of February we will deactivate all matrix accounts that did not login for a period longer than 4 months. This procedure will be run on regular basis.
**Changes in email and nextcloud storage**
As of January 1st we've decided to cut the free storage quotas in half for all new users (1GB mailbox storage and 2GB cloud). We need to make this change as our resources are depleting too fast. The current amount of donations that are coming in is not enough to sustain the project's infrastructure for much longer. We've heard many disrooters voicing similar suggestions in the past and after some reflection we now agree.
**Hey it's the beginning of the year. Time to cleanup.**
It's a good time to look at your usage at Disroot and try to clean up a little. Check you email and remove all those hundreds of useless notification emails, get rid of bullshit ads and other post you would most likely throw in to the trash if it would come by regular post.
And what about all those pictures from our camera phones? Thanks to nextcloud they can all be directly uploaded to your cloud. To help clean up there too we've installed this great little [app](https://cloud.disroot.org/apps/keeporsweep/) in Nextcloud called [Keep or Sweep](https://apps.nextcloud.com/apps/keeporsweep). Now go delete those pocket pics :P

*(Sprint 43)*
Hi there. Well rested? Ate nice food, visited places? Nice. Now get back to work!
Past weeks, as we wrote in the previous blog posts, were full of work. To the point we realized we are taking way too much on our shoulders, which means we tend to start things but not finish them on time. Now, slowly we are getting around finishing previously started things so here is a small dump of things we recently been busy with. Ahhh, and don't worry we did have some leisure time too.
# New Translations
In the past weeks we tested various translation softwares but couldn't find anything that meet our requirements. Websites and documentation, unlike applications, are much harder to translate using dedicated software and require lots of workarounds for very little improvement. So we decided to continue the translation work through **Git**. It might create a higher entry level to some but learning the basics of **Git** and **Markdown** are good skills to have.
So, weve started to implement a new procedure to create, edit and translate the howtos and tutorials. We've also created a very nice overview of the current state of translations, a README file for the **Howto** repository and a **Taiga** board where even multiple people working on the same language can coordinate their work. So far, it works very well. Were still making adjustments, refining the documentation and improving the process, but were in the right direction to have and provide all the guides and tutorials in as many languages as possible. You can check the **Howto Translations State** [here](https://howto.disroot.org/en/contribute/translations_procedure/state/Translations_Howto.pdf) and the **Website Translations State** [here](https://howto.disroot.org/en/contribute/translations_procedure/state/Translations_Website.pdf) (they already needs an update thanks to all you submitting translations).
In the last few weeks weve started translating the site and some howtos into **Russian** and **German**, and revisions and updates into **French**, **Italian** and **Spanish**. The biggest credit for this progress goes to the disrooters **shadowsword**, **wisbit, l3o** and **keyfear**, for getting involved so much and contributing not only with the translations, but also through feedback and collaborative approach.
**Fede** has been a busy ant coordinating all the work as well merging, verifying and approving all the changes and translations. He's been working on improvements to procedures and overviews.
If you want to get in touch with the team and help out with translations or the howtos, join our XMPP room at: [howto@chat.disroot.org](https://webchat.disroot.org/#converse/room?jid=howto@chat.disroot.org)<br>
- [Translations board](https://board.disroot.org/project/fede-disroot-translations/epics)
- [Howto board](https://board.disroot.org/project/disroot-disroot-h2/epics)
# New howto theme
In the past weeks **Antilopa** has been busy creating a new theme for [https://howto.disroot.org](https://howto.disroot.org). A while back we noticed that the old theme was not suitable to our needs. The information became harder to find as the number of tutorials grew. The effect as always, is pretty great. **Antilopa** did a very nice, minimalistic and clean theme that resembles our website's look and feel. There is still some issues we have been informed about regarding how the new site renders on some screens and **Antilopa** is working to fix it. If you find anything, please report it on our [issue board](https://board.disroot.org/project/disroot-disroot/issues). Remember to add *[WEBSITE]* prefix in the issue title so it can be hunted faster and fixed.
# Working out some internal procedures
**Meaz** has been busy going through our support ticketing queue which has become messy like a student's room after a week long house party. The result of this is an improved, clearer support queues, as well as introduction of shifts. Every week a different person is responsible to assign tickets, keep track of whats incoming as well as kick the ass of those who slack too much with replies (wink wink you know who you are...).
<br><br>
**Fede** drafted a nice welcome document that we will be putting somewhere on the website shortly. It should help onbording of new users. We have also started long discussion about things we can improve to make new users easily find their home. We know there are a lot of rough edges everywhere. Our goal is to work on more unified experience across all services. We have spent some time brainstorming and defining some of the low hanging fruit and we'll get to the implementation in the coming sprints.
# FAQ
Yes finally. No more answering *'use just username and not username@disroot.org'* for the hundredth time each day :P Thanks to **Meaz**, we have finally started and compiled a **FAQ** on the website **\o/**. Additionally, he also started to teach our bot **milkman** (name is subject to change, the joke ain't funny anymore), to answer the **FAQ** questions for all those on the chat side. **Antilopa** will be still working on visual and UX improvements of the page and of course we will be adding more questions and even more answers as we go.
# Red Pill
![](redpill_0.png)
**RedPill** is our take on **XMPP** webchat from **Opcode** called **ConverseJS**. Last weeks **Muppeth** as a side project decided to work on the looks of the webchat. Result of which you can observe at [https://webchat.disroot.org](https://webchat.disroot.org). This is just the beginning and long awaited change. In near future we will be busy implementing various features like audio/video conferencing, voice messages, reactions, as well as many visual improvements. This is just the first take on it. The name for our flavor of the client was a last minute idea, hence the main and dominating color is blue instead of red but we will be checking into how reds will work out in this setting. For those who want to follow the work on the webchat, you can use [https://devchat.disroot.org](https://devchat.disroot.org) where we play and test ideas. Source code of our changes will be published as soon as we are finished migrating our current git repositories to a new home.
Here you have some screenshots:
![](redpill_1.png)
![](redpill_2.png)
# Diaspora addon on Hubzilla
...And time for bad news. Despite spending countless hours debugging issues on our **Hubzilla** connector to the **Diaspora** network, we have not made any progress in terms of finding a solution. Currently (as is for months in fact) **Diaspora** addon is disabled. We have for now decided to not spend any more resources actively searching for solutions. We will however continue to report back to the **Hubzilla** main devs. We hope in the future an issue will be spotted, if not by us then perhaps someone else and fixed. We are now going to focus instead on getting **Hubzilla** to the point where is goes out from our open beta testing and gets it's place on the website as the goto social network.
<br><br>
As you can see this was quite some stuff. Don't worry next posts will be much shorter as we are now very strict on the amount of work we take on :P

So, looks like the world went totally crazy the last weeks. Our cities feel more like ghost towns and we are all trying to avoid contact with others to stop the spread of the virus. While all this chaos is going on, we sadly start giving up our online liberties to the tech giants. Our kids are now forced into Google classroom, and we are forced to use tools like MS-Teams, Zooms, Slacks, Discord and all. It looks as if we all have sign off our virtual lives away in fear and panic. What's worse is that the same fate can soon happen to our *IRL* (in real life). We need to keep things in check. We are launching Covid19 Kit to help and provide services to those that seek alternatives and don't want to get caught trapped inside the walled gardens. We decided to throw in some extra services that do not require account creation into the mix. Hopefully we will continue to improve the new experimental services (Mumble and Cryptpad) as well as add new services as we go based on your feedback and requirements. You can find **the Covid19 Kit page** here: [https://disroot.org/covid19](https://disroot.org/covid19). Of course the registrations and all other services continue to work as usual.
Additionally we are starting an experimental endeavor where we want to help setup and maintain individual, custom made platforms for organizations and small business that are looking for better, more ethical, transparent and FLOSS based service provider. We are still setting up so if you are interested, please hit us up on [email](mailto:support@disroot.org).
While we are trying to do our best to facilitate all your needs, we all must not forget that we are not the only ones out there. The internet should remain decentralized and distributed so that the user base spreads out evenly across the network. Remember, we are just a little fish in the ocean. Have a look at [https://libreho.st](https://libreho.st) or [https://chatons.org](https://chatons.org) and look for a provider that best suits your needs.

**Hello Disrooters**:
Since I've been using **Nextcloud Deck** privately for several months now, and most serious bugs have been fixed (there were some problems interacting with the quite new **Android** app), I think its a good moment to give the Community a short overview.
---
# What is Deck?
**Nextcloud Deck** is a **KANBAN** style organization tool. So to begin with, what is KANBAN?
Its origins come from the process control of production in industry and it was developed by **Toyota** in **1947** to increase the insufficient productivity of the company. It is basically based on lists in which tasks are placed as cards.
While agile methods are becoming more and more common in software development, KANBAN is still the absolute standard method in all production facilities around the world.
## How does it look like?
![](en/deck_web_interface.jpg)
## What features does it provide?
* Add your tasks to cards and put them in order
* Assign user to cards
* Assign labels for even better organization
* Write down additional notes in markdown
* Share with your team, friends or family
* Attach files and embed them in your markdown description
* Discuss with your team using comments
* Keep track of changes in the activity stream
# Getting started
In **Disroot**s default setup the **Deck** app isn't present in the app navigation bar.
![](en/navbar.png)
To add it, click on your profile picture on the top right corner and choose “Settings”.<br>
Then go to “App order” and tick the **Deck** checkbox.
![](en/app_order.gif)
Tip of the day: take the opportunity to change the app order to your needs via drag'n'drop.
![](en/navbar_deck.png)
Here is a tutorial that shows the most important functions of **Deck**.<br>
- [Deck functions tutorial](https://deck.readthedocs.io/en/latest/User_documentation_en/) (The UI is from an older Nextcloud version, but nevertheless it's helpful.)
## Android companion app
With the **Android** app you can access and organize your projects even when you are on the road.<br>
It offers almost all functions that are available in the web interface.
![](en/deck_android_app.jpg)
**Get it on**
![https://f-droid.org/en/packages/it.niedermann.nextcloud.deck/](en/f-droid.png)
## What's missing?
Not much actually. For larger and more complex projects, the possibility to tweak notification setting more specifically would of course be desirable.<br>
- [Ability to choose to be notified per board](https://github.com/nextcloud/deck/issues/713)<br>
It would also be great if cards with a due date were shown in the calendar.<br>
- [Integrate with Nextcloud CalDAV API](https://github.com/nextcloud/deck/issues/15)
## Final words
I've been using **Deck** for half a year now to coordinate smaller projects and tasks in my daily life. This works very well for me and this app is definitely worth a look.
**Best regards,<br>
avg_joe**

For the past year our interest in **Diaspora** as a social network solution has been declining. We knew that at one point there will come the time to make the decision about the future of our pod on the federation map. The moment has come to face the inevitable and to announce that we will be phasing out **Diaspora** in favor of something we feel has bigger potential and suits our platform better and something we've been invested in the past year.
The performance of our **Diaspora pod** for the last months has been terrible. People constantly complain about the slow stream load times, and we personally were not satisfied with its performance even though we did what we could to improve it. We have also been attacked by the spam account creation which lead us to decide to temporary close registrations while fighting it off. However, we have never re-opened the registrations which sadly reflects our lack of motivation to keep the pod running.
Do we have anything against **Diaspora**? Not at all.
Of course the performance could be improved. **Diaspora** has been with us from the very beginning. It was **Diaspora** where we first posted a hello world as **Disroot** project, and in fact was the one and only advertisement of **Disroot** done by us. It was a great experience and great community. However, nothing stays in one place. The times are changing (*"ecosystem is moving"*  )and we feel like we need to move on. We do not want to get to the situation where provide multiple social networks and thus we need to choose for a single solution we can stand behind, focus on and support as much as we can. For past four years it was **Diaspora** but looking around, there are amazing projects that stroke our interest and we've become more involved with. The overwhelming feature set of **Hubzilla** in terms of not only interoperability with other protocols, but also features such as groups, profiles, chats, forums, articles and of course, the nomadic identity and the Zot protocol in general, made us look at its direction more and more. On the other hand the ActivityPub powered networks show the potential of new, fresh and massively occupied federated networks. We feel a need for change and we are want to put our efforts at something we can identify with. Obviously we are currently invested into Hubzilla as we believe it is a brilliant social network ahead of its time, providing set of features unseen anywhere else, and yet very underestimated. That said we do not want to make "impulsive" decision. This is why we cannot tell at this stage which exactly social network we will eventually choose. It's most likely going to be Hubzilla but it could as well be Friendica, Pleroma, Pixelfed or even mastodon. At this stage it is too early to tell. We know Hubzilla has it's shortcomings and so before we manage to address those, it stays unanswered.
What we can say is that officially we will be phasing out our current Diaspora pod. So what does it mean for current users? Not much actually. **Diaspora** will be operational until the last active user shuts the lights off. We are not **Google** to kick people out like with **G+**. We are however going to:
- Remove the **Diaspora** page from our website,
- Close registration
- Start with purging inactive accounts without possibility to reactivate. We will automatically purge users inactive for longer than 4 months without any prior warning.
- In the meantime we will be working on Diaspora's replacement.
We would like to say thank you to Diaspora devs for providing us with first ever federated social network, for all the years you've been with us during and prior the birth of Disroot. We are tremendously grateful for your efforts and your work. We will do our best to not leave "The Federation" protocol and still stay in touch with the Disapora network. For now though, Thanks for all the fish, and see you on the flip side.

Disroot.org is a platform providing multiple services for many different use cases. Most of the services offered on the platform already provide their own mobile app but that is ungraspable to the many people who were constantly inquiring about a "Disroot app". Time and time again we've been explaining people that they can use any email app supporting IMAP/POP3 or that they can just grab nextcloud app to sync files or use any Jabber client for their chat. But now, thanks to a very clever Disrooter, we actually have a Disroot app, something we, the admins, couldn't even imagine! the Disapp works as a swiss army knife for Disroot. It helps users install appropriate apps for each service, as well as open Disroot related URL's within the app window for those services that don't have a dedicated application. Its a very neat approach that solves a lot of problems for new comers as well as veteran users. We are very excited and very thankful for **massimiliano** as well as all the people in the community that have helped making it happen.
**Nomad.**
As some of you know for last months we are experimenting with an amazing social network called Hubzilla. Together with other disrooters we are working on the documentation, theme, plugins and few other things that will make our instance a complete package easy to onboard and use. Yet again, with pure caffeine running through his veins, the sleepless Disrooter decided to take on the task of creating dedicated app for hubzilla called Nomad. Nomad, created by **massimiliano** , is a fork of #dandelion (mobile app for diaspora) which serves a webview version of hubzilla with extra features such as native menus, share with, and other neat things you expect from the mobile app. It's still in early stages of development and needs a lot fo work but its very much awesome already and makes hubzilla usage on mobile a breeze.
We are very excited about those two new apps and would like to thank all the people that were involved in the process of creating them, testing and translating.
you can find both apps on [fdroid]( https://f-droid.org/) if you don't use that app store yet, its about time to start:

Some weeks ago the open source community around ownCloud was surprised to hear many of the core developers, including one of the founders have decided to part ways with ownCloud inc. Frank Karlitschek announced it first on his blog ([http://karlitschek.de/2016/04/big-changes-i-am-leaving-owncloud-inc-today/](http://karlitschek.de/2016/04/big-changes-i-am-leaving-owncloud-inc-today/)). Naturally, this action left a lot of question marks regarding the future of the project. Many were concerned ownCloud will now focus more on the enterprise product and will therefor neglect the communitys open source version. Soon after Karlitcheks announcement, ownCloud Inc. announced their “ownCloud Foundation” project which intended to address such concerns. However, as pointed by several people in the community, this move did not address the issues that were the cause of staffs exodus (Contribution licensing among others) and rather it was seen by big part of the community as a move to keep things as they are while saving face.
We didnt have to wait long to hear a new fork of ownCloud has been created under the name Nextcloud, and to no surprise, Frank Karlitschek and all the core developers that previously left ownCloud inc. were behind it. Nextcloud in contrary to ownCloud wants to be community oriented. With no restrictions in licensing (link to what CLA is) and with no enterprise version. They want to remain as transparent as possible and to base their business model on enterprise hosting and support rather than premium functionalities, just like many open source projects do these days.
This reassuring words from the guys at Nextcloud ([http://karlitschek.de/2016/06/nextcloud/](http://karlitschek.de/2016/06/nextcloud/)) made us decide to jump ship and enjoy more freedom. Therefor we would like to announce we have begun testing Nextcloud for disroot. As soon as we make sure all the applications hosted on our platform are compatible with Nextcloud, we will announce the exact date we would like to switch.
For all you Disrooters out there, there will be no significant difference in the short run. The Nextcloud release at the moment is no different to ownCloud, and everything should work out of the box. Even though Nextcloud has already released their mobile versions of the apps and the desktop sync client (which of course we would recommend you to move to once we make the switch), the ownCloud mobile apps are currently compatible. We do expect significant improvement to the user experience in the long run. The community around Nextcloud has grown like mushrooms over the last few weeks and we are very positive it will keep on growing. That will naturally result in better user experience, more apps, more integrations and all the goodies you would expect form your personal cloud.

### Create account, test, point out bugs, mistakes, and others
**Dear users, supporters, friends…**
22 days of silence and we are back online. It has been three intensive weeks. Not only because of the amount of work with the new project but also because of great summer weather that was tempting us to spend some of that free time away from the screen. Nights however were long enough to get things done (who needs sleep if you have coffee). We hope you guys like the initial end result and will use our services with pleasure.
### Its time for testing and feedback.
We are aware there might be some glitches, typos, bugs, errors and other things weve missed when setting up. Therefor we count on your feedback. If you find something that isnt right use our feedback section or write us an email directly to support@disroot.org. We would like to encourage you to use the [feedback](https://forum.disroot.org) section as it will function as a reference for other users that encounter similar problems / questions / issues.
Apart from testing and improving current setup we are staring to work on tutorials and howtos to help you integrate all the services with your devices, and understand and use encryption.

title: 'Disroot joins the Matrix network'
date: 12/20/2016
taxonomy:
category: news
tag: [disroot, news, matrix]
body_classes: 'single single-post'
---
**For the last sprint of the year we decided to focus on improving instant messaging.** Weve been big enthusiasts of XMPP as the best solution for chatting, since like… forever. The obvious perks of XMPP are **federation** and **decentralization**. There are plenty of XMPP service providers and setting up your own server to join the network is not that hard of a process (or is is at least, possible). However there are a lot of problems within the network; Incompatibility between clients, no real support for Apple products, problems with audio/video conferencing and small user base, just to name a few. We set out to work on our current chat solution in order to provide the best XMPP user experience possible. During our research and work we got involved in a lot of discussions within different FLOSS communities about the future of free and open IM. The more we discussed this matter, the more matrix.org project was coming up as a new alternative. After doing some research on our own we decided to try it out and see what the hype is all about.
![](logo1.png)
**Matrix.org** is, just like XMPP, a **decentralized, federated, open-source** Instant messaging software. Just like XMPP, it serves single chat as well as group chatting. However the strength of Matrix goes way beyond that. There is Matrix support for any device and operating system, either through its official app called “Riot” or various other clients to choose from. The **end-to-end encryption** works on all platforms using Riot app, for both single and group chats. VIdeo/Audio one-on-one calls and conferencing is supported on any device using Riot out of the box. Another very promising feature is its bridge possibilities. Bridging means you can connect different networks/protocols with Matrix network to have bidirectional communication. At this moment any IRC, Slack or Gitter, telegram and XMPP-MUC room can be bridged together with Matrix, enabling people on all those separate networks to communicate with one another. There are many more bridges in the works as one of the main goals of the Matrix project is to bring all the “walled gardens“ together. Their approach to federation is also quite innovative. Rooms are distributed across the federated network. This means that group conversations are no longer tight to the single server they have been created on, so they can continue operating even if the originating server gets shut down.
## Matrix is still a very young project.
However it is already exceeding our expectations. it is easy to use, easy to maintain and the fact that it is easy to develop new functionalities for it, makes it a very promising project. This is why we too decided to join the new online sensation and deploy Matrix server for all Disroot users. Currently we are still testing, tweaking and gathering feedback before we launch it officially (1st of January meetup on Disroots Matrix channel anyone?). You can already test it yourself and say hello. You can join with your Disroot account.
## Whats with XMPP than?
As much as we were all for XMPP, the time has come to perhaps let go and move on to something newer with a fresh approach. Of course we are not ditching XMPP (and probably never will) so the server will remain functional with all the possible up to date features. Nothing will change in that regard, lets not burn all the bridges just yet. In the coming time however, we want to put more emphasis on making Matrix the default communication service on Disroot. Lets see where we get from there. Time will tell which solution is best.
Still not convinced?
For those of you who would like to read more about the philosophy behind Matrix check out [Matrix.org](http://matrix.org/#about). Those of you who prefer to watch things, [check this inspiring presentation from matrix core developer](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9b9ZN5MVsE), **Matthew Hodgson**, at TADS Lisbon 2016.

Hi there.
Today Disroot server had a bit of a tumble.
Due to little mistake, our main server became a total zombie. There was no way for us to bring it back to life other then driving 70km to the datacenter to manually restarting it. Server was down at 14:45 and back up at 16:05
We're very sorry for this situation and we will take extra measures to prevent that from happening in the future.
### From other bad news.
Some of you already noticed, **Circles** app has been disabled on our server. This is due to a bug that caused huge performance issues. We hope that it will be resolved soon. Until then we need to keep it off in order to have our platform operational.
### And some good news.
In comming week we will be commencing huge disroot infrastructure upgrade operation! We will deploy SSD dedicated database server, upgrade RAM and storage capacity. This will greatly improve performance and give disroot a needed buffer to grow. Of course this will mean some short (hopefully) downtimes during the week, about which we will of course inform you all.
If you want to be up to date with whats going on with disroot, you can follow our:
[Mastodon](https://social.weho.st/@disroot) or [Diaspora](https://pod.disroot.org/u/disroot) acccounts. Additionally you should definatelly check [https://state.disroot.org](https://state.disroot.org) and subscribe to incident and downtime reports via email or rss feed.

**Hi disrooters,**
Last weekend due to openmailbox-gate we had a flood of new comers looking into using Disroot.
Last week (4th aug.) was also disroots 2nd anniversary \o/ a perfect time mark to welcome such influx of new users, we hope you will have much fun using our services!
However, as much as we are delighted by the course of events, Our servers are somewhat struggling. For last nights weve been working on optimizing and tuning our setup to cope with all the new visitors and extra load. We are getting there, but there is still some tweaking needed so please forgive us for any performance issues on the cloud. We hope things will stabilize in a few days.
We are also getting lot of questions regarding the project so we would like to answer some:
1. At the moment we are not a legal entity. We are about to become one. Within the next few weeks (as older disrooters know) we will become non-profit foundation.
2. Email aliases is work in progress
3. Privacy policy is work in progress in short, we dont track, we dont use analytics (no google nor piwik and such), we do not collect data other then what is necessary for services to function (we store your emails on our server, the files you upload, we know your username etc),
4. More information such us our costs, status, future plans, some statistics will be posted soon (within two weeks) on our annual report that we would like to share in a straight forward transparent way.
5. We are working on a new website which means we will update a lot of information. Ahhh…. and no more JavaScript requirements on the website.
6. “Im getting HTTP 500 Error when creating account” Seems like this error appears when using chrome browser. We are looking into it, but in the mean time, you can ignore it as your account was aready created, regardless the error / or use firefox
7. For Updates on downtime, scheduled maintenance work or issues with any of the services please check https://state.disroot.org or #state:disroot.org (matrix room)
8. For News, announcements and changes you can visit our website, follow us on diaspora or mastodon.
Just a reminder to all new comers. **Disroot is not a company!** we give no warranty for our services, nor for the data, although we are doing our best to provide the best possible experience which also includes daily backups (stored for 7 days). As much as we are trying to answer all questions and help everyone, we also have to keep our dayjobs, take care of our family and other projects we are involved with, so please be patient with us.
--------------------
*If you feel Disroot is so awesome it should replace our day-jobs (or just get better servers so more people can use it), you can send your money using any of the methods specified at https://disroot.org/donate if every user would buy us a “beer” or two each month it would be enough to keep this project running without a stress (we promise we wont really spend it on beer).*

# Donating to FLOSS projects
We'd like to start with some good news, an awesome achievement made possible thanks to all of those who have been supporting the project financially.
Last year we've decided to unlock a goal we've been dreaming of since the moment we started Disroot. Since our platform depends on the work of Open/Libre Source software developers and their amazing creations, we decided to share part of the donations that we receive with those who make Disroot possible. And so, we're very proud and happy, that we have just transferred **300 euros** in donations to several projects. This is the amount we have managed to accumalate **from January till March**. This time, the projects we've donated to, are:
- [Conversejs](https://conversejs.org/) *(XMPP webchat we host at https://webchat.disroot.org)*
- [Conversations.im](https://conversations.im/) *(Android XMPP client)*
- [Dino.im](https://dino.im) *(XMPP GNU/Linux desktop client)*
- [Hubzilla](https://hubzilla.org) *(social network and publishing platform)*
- [Nextcloud](https://nextcloud.com) *(bounty pending)*
- [Searx](https://asciimoo.github.io/searx/) *(meta-search engine)*.<br>
We're really happy we could contribute, even with small donation, to those projects, which we host or use on daily basis. We expect that the sum will grow, so we will be able to donate to more projects in the future.<br>
We salute everyone that has made a contribution to the Disroot Platform and we would like to ask those that haven't yet, to consider it. There are a lot of financial challenges lying ahead.<br>
We want to set an example and show that there are different ways of financing a project, that it is not necessary to require people to pay fixed great sums or to sell private data as exchange for free services. We think that it should be a conscious personal choice of each disrooter to decide how much they value our services and how much money they can contribute. We don't lie or hide the fact that everything has its price. We pay for hardware (since we own it), for rack space, electricity and bandwidth in the datacenter. Not to mention the labor we put into the project, which by now far exceeds most typical day jobs and that we still doing it (lets hope that will change at some point too) for free.<br>
We can say without a doubt that if everyone would buy us a cup of coffee, not only we could stop worrying about hardware and have paid staff, but also donate much more money to Open/Libre Source software and thus improve the Disroot experience. Such healthy and natural eco-system and symbiosis is what we believe should be a driving force behind ethical internet service providers, and we hope we'll be able to reach that point soon enough.
# (Re)Structuring the project
In the last weeks we focused heavily on restructuring (or finally structuring, to be more accurate) our little organization. We have worked on creating workflows and better clear division of tasks. We have cleaned up our backlog and added some more tasks and discussed some short and long terms projects and goals. The last months have been very stressful for both of us in our professional, private and our Disroot life. We're under a heavy load for months now, which concluded in signs of burnout, depression and powerlessness. We have identified those issues (we hope) on time and decided to rather spend the time working out how to create the best working conditions for ourselves to avoid a mental meltdown which would harm all aspects of our life. It is getting more difficult but we hope the work we have done so far will bring good results longterm. We have something up our sleeve and if everything works well, you will hear about it very soon (/teaser).
# Nextcloud Performance issues, Circles and Deck
For last weeks we have been struggling with - perhaps not noticeable yet - performance issues on Nextcloud. To prevent it from becoming evident quickly, we've been working during the last three weeks or so on analyzing and optimizing our Nextcloud setup. We already managed to somewhat lower the impact it seems to be causing on the hardware (mainly CPU), but there are still some issues and bugs that we noticed along the way, on which we will focus next. Furthermore, the plan is to take each service on the plate and optimize them one by one in order to provide the best performance we possibly can.
Now for cool stuff: Circles are back! Yay! That took a while, didn't it? Circles is a cloud app that allows you to create your own groups. Private, public or secret. It makes it easier to share files, or message within your different groups. Because Circles was out of order for so long we have wiped out all the old circles that were created in the past. We didn't want people to be suprised that they are suddenly sharing with others something they forgot they did long time ago.
Another, much requested app, we've decided to try out is Deck. Deck is a simple project management board (simple Kanban or Todo/Doing/Done board if you will). We were doubting for a while whether to install it, since we already offer [Taiga](https://board.disroot.org) which is a feature rich, full blown professional project management software. However, we realize not everyone is seeking such complex solution and that a similar simpler tool can be very useful for them. This is why we've chose to make it available. In order not to clutter the User Interface, the app is disabled by default in the menu view. To bring it up, all you need to do is go to *Settings > Additional Settings > AppOder* and enable it.
# Purging History in private Matrix rooms and changing riot's URL.
For the last couple of months we've been removing history older than 4 months from public rooms, and inactive users (inactive for over 4 months). This however, doesn't stop the database from growing. Therefor we have now decided to also start wiping old history (older then a year) from private rooms. Keeping room history and all metadata connected to them forever is a terrible idea, in our opinion, and not sustainable at all. One year of history is way too much already (it's instant messaging, where messages should live in your device and not on the servers out there). This is why, starting from May 25th, we will start clearing history older than one year of all private rooms on our server.
On 1st June we will move current Riot URL over to [https://riot.disroot.org](https://riot.disroot.org). This means that if you use it, you will need to make a backup of your encryption keys before we switch or else you will loose access to your end-to-end encrypted messages (unless you use other clients like a mobile one). The new URL is already functioning, so you can switch at any time. On 1st June we will remove Riot from [https://chat.disroot.org](https://chat.disroot.org)
# ☠ Internet is about to die ☠
Unfortunately, we must end this joyful post with a depressing note.
The future of the free internet is in danger. And it's not tinfoil hat speech. This is real. The latest EU legislation around copyright laws requires commercial (for now) entities to implement filters that will scan every post, comment, image, video or music published by their users against copyright infringement. Despite large opposition, the new directive has passed and within the next years all European countries will need to implement it one way or another. Although it does specify that the new laws will not affect non-profit organizations, we're not entirely sure if those like Disroot, or the entire fediverse, will not be included. However, while one might think we have managed to escape it and that disrooters, as well as all the fediverse dwellers, can enjoy unaffected freedom (wait until all google etc. users start moving to free platforms like ours), there is another draconian law in the working that is being passed behind most people's backs, under the code name #TERREG.<br>
According to this directive, a law will enforce service provider to remove "terrorist" content within one hour notice! This means there is no way to object or dispute, no room for discussion, nothing. And if you think this will affect only "terrorist" content think about it for a second. No one argues that ISIS propaganda, Nazi, white (or any for that matter) supremacy should not be tolerated, but who defines what a "terrorist" act is? For some, anti-government demonstration is considered terrorist. Can the yellow-vest movement be defined as terorist organization? In the eyes of French government, it is very likely. Guess who is the one that will be sending takedown notice emails. Need proof? [Official EU agencies falsely report more then 550 archive.org URLS as terrorist content](https://blog.archive.org/2019/04/10/official-eu-agencies-falsely-report-more-than-550-archive-org-urls-as-terrorist-content/). <br>
The new legislation, together with previously passed copyright directives, has the potential to destroy the internet as we know it and turn it to what TV and Radio's are now. Controlled, licensed, non-interactive, censored handful of corporately and governmentally owned websites and services. While the copyright directive potentially doesn't affect non-profits, who get to escapes the imposed content filters, those are being smuggled via backdoor thanks to 1 hour takedown notice requirement which will push most of the website owners to use such filters (or stay awake 24/7). Guess who has enough money to develop those filters and who will benefit from licensing it to the entire European based internet? And don't get fooled by political propaganda. This new law is as useful for the right as it is for the left. We're being played by their silly little left/right game like a bunch of sheep! It's time to rise up beyond the obsolete 20th century division. The world is not binary! It's not blue or red, black or white and its time we start making conscious educated decisions and start kicking back!<br>

## Hi Disrooters,
**First of we would like to wish you all a happy new year. Its been a joy running Disroot for the past year. A lot has changed since we started. We had our fun and our stress moments, we learned a lot and we managed to stay afloat. We can only wish the next year to be as rich as this one was. We wish you the same in your personal and professional life.**
This is the last sprint of the year. Weve focus on Instant chat messaging which took an unexpected turn during the sprint, resulting in setting up a brand new service, we are super excited about. In addition to that, a new version of Nextcloud came around with a lot of improvements and so we took the opportunity to update it and share new features with you. Antilopa has been busy creating Disroot app dashboard and some of the disrooters decided to jump in and help us with writing tutorials.
We can most definitely say that Disroot is getting more lively these days and we think we will see an even bigger boost of user base in the coming year. Considering that the “popularity” of Disroot is growing, we must start thinking more seriously about the financial stability of the project so our infrastructure can grow as the community grows. In the upcoming sprints we will focus on finding ways to get regular flow of income to cover our current and future costs. We will look into regular group contribution, plea for individual donations, think of possible merchandise and look for subsidies that can co-exist with our values and intentions. Our second objective during the upcoming sprints will be to complete many needed tutorials and howtos.
----------
**Hell, why wait? Let us start with a little pleading right now;**
We all heard that nothing is free. Well, there is no such thing as a free service on the internet. The costs of hardware, electricity and server space, are quite high. So when you use a “free” service, you most probably pay for it one way or another. Companies cover the costs of running their services by charging you actual money or by trading your private data with advertising agencies or governments. So far Disroot is running on few irregular donations and much of our personal investment, but that cannot sustain a growing platform. However, if every Disroot user would decide to donate just 1EURO (or whatever currency youre comfortable with) a month, all our costs, investments and maybe even some of the time we spend on this project could be covered. All it takes is 12“euros“ a year from you to keep this project running and create space for others to make use of Disroot. This is the equivalent of a drink in a bar, few beers, or a pack of cigarettes. Please keep that in mind and consider a regular contribution. Or an irregular contribution anything helps.
-----------
Back to our summary; Here are some more details on whats new:
### [DASHBOARD](https://apps.disroot.org)
You can now find quick access links to all Disroot services with new dashboard at [https://apps.disroot.org](https:apps.disroot.org)
### NEXTCLOUD
Nextcloud has been updated to its latest version Nextcloud 11 includes many new features:
Nextcloud 11 comes with an integrated audio and video chat app. So we are dropping the cumbersome spreed.me in favor of the Spreed call, for built-in one-on-one conversations and conferences. Apart from notifying your cloud contacts when they are invited to join a call, Spreed also allows sending public link to people who dont have an account yet. This app is still very experimental, but there are plenty of features queuing up so expect a lot more cool stuff soon. We would like to gather your feedback about the quality of calls, the interface etc, so dont hesitate and contact us.
The new version got a general performance boost.
And an improved user interface:
- The blue bar at the top has gotten a function menu items will now appear there instead of in the drop down menu, so all options are visible at all times. You can reorder the menu items by simply dragging and dropping them into desired place.
- The new activity panel now includes changes to files, calendar, comments and Todo lists
- Moving files just got easier with the Move option added to the files menu
- The Contacts and Calendar apps also have seen a number of improvements, most notably by introducing public sharing links in the Calendar and improved contacts import in the Contacts app.
- Dashboard easy access to all other Disroot services via dashboard app.
## DIASPORA *
The new version of Diaspora is supporting notifications without the need to refresh the page. Also check out the new dark theme in your personal settings.
## MAIL SPAM PROGRAM
Disroot is getting more popular and so weve noticed some spam activity recently. We are “teaching“ our spam-bot to automatically detect messages that look like spam and mark them for other users. We do that by scanning Junk folders, which are considered spam, on regular basis. We do not do it on all user accounts, because we cant be sure only spam emails reside in your Junk folder and we simply do not want to touch your mailbox, even if its done by a computer program (bot). However, if you would like to join our effort to fight spam hitting our Disroot server, please send us an email (support_at_disroot.org) and we will include your account in weekly spam check.
## MATRIX.ORG
As you might read in our [blogpost](https://disroot.org/disroot-joins-the-matrix-network/), while working on improving current XMPP server, weve decided to take unexpected turn and launch new service called matrix. these last weeks has been quite a success as we were testing all the functionalities of the new software. We are still testing it out, but you can already join in, say hello and see for yourself what Matrix is all about. We hope to officially announce it in coming weeks.
Last, A big thank to **maryjane** for jumping the wagon and helping us with writing tutorials. We got inspired and made a new years resolution to finally improve our collection of howtos and tutorials.
We hope more people get encouraged anyone is welcome to join this effort for an incomplete list of long pending tutorials go to [our task board](https://board.disroot.org/project/disroot-disroot/backlog?tags=howto).

# First half of 2020
Hi there,
The first half of 2020 is almost behind us, and it feels like someone packed in at least 5 years worth of events into it. Seems like the few things left for the second half is alien invasion, sun explosion and the discovery of time travel or teleportation. Looking at recent world wide developments, none of us would be particularly surprised if one of the above things would take place. For many around the world, life has been turned up side down. Since the project just turned 5 this month, perhaps it is time for a quick summary of the last months at Disroot and for sharing some ideas for the upcoming half a year.
## Mailbox encryption
As you could read in previous posts, we set a goal of bringing mailbox encryption to Disroot this year. We decided to explore two possibilities: server side encryption and end-to-end encryption of mailboxes.
**Server side** encryption is a form of encryption where both public and private keys are kept on the server. Very similar to how files are encrypted on your Disroot cloud (Nextcloud). There is no need to run any additional, specialized software on users's devices - this means users can use the mail clients (apps) of their choice - thus IMAP/POP3 compatibility is kept. However, there are few down sides to server side encryption. One is, of course, that the encryption keys are stored on the server, meaning that by knowing the password of the user (through Man in the Middle Attack or some form of Brute Force Attack to name a couple of examples) it is possible to decrypt emails. Additionally changing / resetting passwords posses another issue where just like with the cloud, users need to either request removal of the encryption keys (in case of password reset) and will no longer be able to decrypt previous emails, or needs to update their keys with new password (given old password is known to user). Since this seem to be quite of a headache without much of gain (with a bit of an effort, someone gaining control of the server could decrypt mailboxes), we also looked at end-to-end encryption possibilities.
**End-to-end** encryption is one where the private key used to encrypt your emails is stored on your device. In that way even with access to the server it is impossible to decrypt emails stored in the mailbox without getting hold of your private key, which can only happen if access to your device is gained. Some providers out there that provide some sort of end-to-end encryption, create a form of walled garden or closed ecosystem where you need to use only a mail client provided by the platform (no choice in clients), are incompatible with other providers (own in-house developed encryption), do not allow you to control the encryption keys (you don't really own the keys as you cannot easily extract them, generate them on a separate machines, back them up, all in the name of making it "easy" for users etc), and some of them even keep your private key on the server (making it essentially server side). For us it is important that end-to-end solution would give disrooters freedom of choice as well as provide full control over the private keys, be - as much as possible - on pair with standards (do not reinvent the wheel) and be fully open source so that other providers within the Librehost realm and beyond could adopt it and create interoperable end-to-end email storage and transmit encryption.
After looking around and trying different solutions, we have stumbled upon a software called *"GPG Mail Gate"*. Although seems abandoned for years, it looks like it solves all issues in one go:
* GPG - uses GnuPG standard for email encryption. This means it will work not only within Disroot but could be used to encrypt emails to others and others could easily encrypt to you.
* Public key upload - Interface that allows you to upload your public key, which means the server will automatically encrypt all of your incoming emails with your public key while your private key stays secret on your device and Disroot server never sees nor has access to or helps generate one. Additionally with a key server in place, your public key could be used by anyone out there to automatically encrypt emails to you. No need to share keys manually
* Encrypting emails you send out - even if you send in plaintext, all emails sent by you would be stored end-to-end encrypted on the server
* Easy setup - does what it needs to do and does not require rocket scientists to operate
### *So,* *when would we be running it?*
Since the software is quite outdated, we would like to first find new maintainer, re-write some parts of it, and create better mechanism, embedded in the webmail for uploading keys. Additionally we would like to make it Autocrypt compliant to make it that much more robust.
#### *Want to help?*
We are looking for developers who are willing to take on the maintenance of the project, rewrite it with python3 (or any other choice of language), and redo the key upload web service. We are trying to secure some funding for it as well so might pay a bit more than a beer (maybe a crate of beer) to help fund the work that has potential to benefit bigger network of email providers. If you are willing to help out, please get in touch with us.
You can find the current code on our [git](https://git.disroot.org/Disroot/gpg-mailgate)
## Themes
As a part of the work we have started last year of providing more unified experience, Meaz have started working on themes for some of the services. At this moment we have "disrooted" Hubzilla, Lufi, Nextcloud, Roundcube *(coming soon...)*, and we have Searx, Privatebin and ConverseJS almost there too. This is just the initial work but it opens possibilities for us not to only focus on color pallets and small design elements but also start working on general app design which will improve User eXperience. So far we are having fun doing it and we are excited to see where we can take this in the future.
## Volounteer fee
Disroot has come a long way in our financial strive for independence and sustainability. Starting from the time we paid all the costs from our own pockets, through the moment when costs were finally paid by donations and to the moment when we started donating back to FLOSS software.
We decided it is time to set a new milestone on that journey. Disroot is our precious gem. We spend more time on it than we do on our day jobs (don't tell this to our bosses). While the platform grows so does the time needed for it. Our ultimate goal is to reach financial independence and focus on Disroot as our main occupation while sticking to our initial ideas behind our "business model" and not "sell out". Current situation is not sustainable and our private/family life suffers from it as the day has only 24 hours and you still need to fit enough time for sleeping and stuff (something we lack as well).
We are aware of the fact that our chosen path to achieve this very ambitious goal is not easy. We do believe that a social approach on economy - letting people decide how much they can and are willing to financially contribute to the project - is possible and can generate sustainable balance between those who can afford paying, those who are not able to pay for the services, and those who maintain the platform and get paid in return. We believe this is the right way to go further, but the road leading to that ultimate goal is far and will take long. So, we decided to take it one step at a time.
Dutch legislation allows foundations such as ours (in our case a non-profit one) to pay a small fee for volunteer work. It cannot be more than 170 euro a month or more than 1700 euro a year in total (= aprox. 140 euros a month). Seeing our financial situation allows for such payments, we decided to start a Disroot Core Team volunteer fee program. The Team is currently made of 4 people.
In addition to the costs and FLOSS donations, this year we also decided to set aside up to 400 euros per month for unexpected expenses as well as for future investments in hardware. Once the costs and expenses are covered, if there are at least 140 euros left, we could pay a volunteer fee to one of the Team members, if there are over 280 euros we could pay two volunteers and so on. As a safety net, if we fail to gather sufficient funds three months in a row, we will stop paying the volunteer/s.
We are glad to announce that we are already able to pay the fee to two of our volunteers 🎉. We will strive to keep them covered and to get others on board too. Once we get everyone onboard, there will be no force to stop us from another milestone of getting everyone on proper payroll.
We are counting on your help. It's important to realize that any amount helps. If everyone would pay 1 euro a month for the services Disroot has to offer, not only we would be able to pay all the costs, invest in better hardware, sponsor free and open source software development, but even salary to all the admins. So don't wait until you are able to pay lots of money to us, start small and lets grow together.
Think of us when you buy your favourite beverage each month in you local bar, cafe or at home and just 'buy' as a drink.
Check our [donation page](https://disroot.org/donate)
## 2019 yearly report
Now, this went totally south this year. For some reason writing yearly report took us half a year. We are not sure what exactly happened. We could blame Coronavirus or just generally 2020 as a whole, but that is just taking a shortcut. Most likely the amount of work that has piled up and the constant chase of priorities has caused the yearly report to be pushed into the backlog abyss. Well, finally we have managed it and there it is [link](https://disroot.org/en/annual_reports/AnnualReport2019.pdf)
We hope you like it and since it came out "slightly" too late it is a good moment to check the past year's highlights.
## What is planned for second half of the year
We want to focus our work on better User experience. Fede is working hard to update all the tutorials and howtos, and is producing new ones. We will continue working on themes and UX (use experience) improvements. But mainly we will be focusing on improving the email service. We want to launch better spam protection, new webmail, mailbox encryption and better handling of custom domain and alias requests.
So unless aliens invade our planet, Earth gets swallowed by a black hole, get hit by Nibiru or any other unexpected event comes our way this year, we are looking towards busy months ahead with lots of exciting work.

We hope you are all enjoying the last days of 2017 and are ready to take on what comes next year.
These last months have been really encouraging for us with all the positive feedback we've been getting, the increase of support and of course the impressive contribution of translations.
We are now ready to introduce the couple of extra feature we've been promising for some time - The possibility to link your own domain to use for email aliases and the possibility to add extra space to your cloud storage.
### Custom Domain linking for email
As we mentioned last announcement, custom domain linking is now possible. This means you can now use @yourdomain.net to send and receive emails. Just like with email aliases, this feature is available to anyone who decides to help the project financially with a monthly "cup o' coffee". If you are interested in getting your domain linked with your Disroot account, have a look at [this form](https://disroot.org/en/forms/domain-linking-form).
### Extra disk space prices
A lot of people have been asking and are waiting for the details regarding extra cloud space. Last week we've sat together and came up with our price per GB. Considering the hardware, backup and capacity costs our price per GB is set to 0.15euro. We will at first offer packages of 14GB, 29GB, 54GB (total space). Once we upgrade our file storage server we will be able to offer even larger storage.
We still need to consult and create the proper procedure of giving out extra space (since this is not donation based it has to follow other administration rules etc), so request forms are not available yet. We will focus on that in first weeks of January so keep your ears and eyes open for announcements.
### Translations
We were very excited when several Disrooters started approaching us offering to translate our howto's. We are even more excited now after we have seen with what motivation and enthusiasm it has been done. In just a couple of weeks nearly all the tutorials on [howto.disroot.org](https://howto.disroot.org) have been translated to Spanish, Portuguese and French and big part of the [disroot.org](https://disroot.org) website is already translated into French.
We cant find the words to express our gratitude and we hope all you guys will enjoy all the tutorials translated to your native languages. So Fede, mdrouet, maryjane, track41 and all the others who helped translating, you guys are amazing! Thank you very much for all the hard work you put into the project.
If you want to help these guys or would like to translate stuff into yet another language, please join the [#disroot_howto:disroot.org matrix channel](https://chat.disroot.org/#/room/#disroot_howto:disroot.org).
#### With this last short announcement of the year we would also like to wish you all a happy new year, lots of luck and joy with whatever you chose to do in the upcoming 2018.

First of all we would like to wish you all a late Happy Solstice! For folks on the same hemisphere as us it means days are finally getting longer while for folks living "up side down" the opposite unfortunately. We hope you are all prepping up for your new years resolutions and will have a blast on the last days of the year. We sure we will.
So, you haven't heard from us in a while. Despite our intentions to post every two weeks, too much work got in our way. Here is some of the things you've missed if you haven't followed us closely (via chat or social media posts).
## 1. New CPUs - More horse power.
Our main server got new and shiny CPUs! Thanks to this upgrade we've gained much needed performance boost. Although we now enjoy some of the load taken off by few extra cores, we have also reached the maximum processor power possible for the current server. This means that if we need to upgrade it in the future, we will have to invest in new hardware - which is something we have to start thinking about in the next year.
## 2. Taiga 4.0
Taiga got a new major version packed with number new features. Some of the highlights include:
- attach issues to sprint
- link user-stories to epics directly upon creation
- redesign lightbox - now more streamlined and improved editor lets you create new user stories with all needed details faster
- due dates - although not very agile now you can set due dates on your tickets
- assign tickets to multiple members of the project
- Notifications - new feature allowing you to see whats new on all your projects in one glance via top bar notification icon
for more details check taiga's [blog](https://blog.taiga.io/) packed with news about this wonderful project management platform.
## 3. Nextcloud 14 update.
This time update has come very late. In fact nextcloud 15 has just been released and we are preparing for update in coming days. This delayed update was due to some issues we wanted to fix prior. This took much more time then expected - in fact we were still implementing a solution to one of the issues just an hour ago! - but we can already see big improvements in the performance in the last weeks. We are awaiting the new version update which will bring more noticeable visual changes. We expect it to land before the new year.
## 4. New registration process.
It's been few good weeks we are running the new system and we are enjoying it a lot. We did some improvements along the way and changed few requirements, and we are very amused by people's stories. Keep them interesting to make this manual process as fun as it can get. Currently although not completely water tight, we are very good in repealing all kind of abusers that used to swarm Disroot before.
## 5. Disroot app rocks.
We cannot express our appreciation and gratitude enough. Massimiliano, the author of the Disroot app, has done some incredible work. In the new update (hitting f-droid in matter of days) the app also provides support for https://state.disroot.org where your phone will receive a notification if there is a new issue, planned maintenance work, downtime or outage. Thanks a lot man! You Rock!!1one
If you don't have the app yet, quick, install it via [web](https://f-droid.org/en/packages/org.disroot.disrootapp/) or directly from the best android app store there is (if you haven't install it yet, do it now!): [F-DROID](https://f-droid.org)
Overall we've been working on various improvements of our infrastructure the last weeks. In small steps we are getting closer and closer to fully automated Disroot setup. Before the end of the year, while trying to enjoy the festive moments of the last days of 2018, we want to work on some last awaiting issues that need attention, finalize yearly report (which is looking awesome), and finally update Hubzilla (we know this is taking forever, and we are sorry for that, but we are really working on it).
Stay tuned for more frequent posts (one of our new years resolution).

## Holidays
Sandy beaches, heat and warm sea. Yup. For the past two weeks Disroot team was enjoying holidays. We've got sun burned, our skin peeled off and we got sunburned again. We had tons of fun and most importantly re-charged our batteries, rested and gotten a lot of ideas and energy for the next months to come. If you thought however we have not worked at all during that time (we wish) you are wrong. We did some work here an there, enjoying warm evenings and cold drinks.
<br><br>
We had to rebuild our backup system in order to make it more performant. With the increase of data being backed up on daily basis we had to take another approach in daily backups. Rather then backing up everything at once, we now broken the backups into smaller chunks which makes it easier to and faster. We are happy with the setup and looking forward to additional improvements we want to implement soon.
## Nextcloud 16
While on holidays we've gotten notification that Nextcloud 16.0.1 is up and ready to roll out. The latest release of Nextcloud bring so many cool new features we couldn't wait and decided to roll it out promptly to all disrooters to enjoy. So whats new? Below are some of the highlights. For more details on new features in Nextcloud 16, check their [blog post](https://nextcloud.com/blog/nextcloud-16-introduces-machine-learning-based-security-and-usability-features-acl-permissions-and-cross-app-projects/)
- **Projects** - you can now create projects which can be linked to files, Talk (chat app) and deck.
- **Talk** - possibility to mention everyone in the room, command that allow you to create user defined actions, various user experience improvements as well as Android and iOS apps
- **Deck** - share boards with your Circles, Integration with projects
- Overall **performance** improvements and **bug fixes**
## New Etherpad theme
We have also enabled the new experimental theme on Etherpad. It looks sleek and gives fresh look that Etherpad was screaming for years for a bit of an uplift. Thanks for new theme and keep up the good work Etherpad team!

## Mission statement
While sipping delicious Gin and Tonic we've been putting together something that was on our ToDo list for way over a year now and it's something we really needed to have defined in order to provide better understanding of what Disroot is, what we stand for, what our aspirations are and how we work. We are currently running it through some friends for proof reading, giving it last polishes and fixes. We plan to publish it within the next two weeks.
## Update to DisApp
While we were burning in the sun, massimiliano decided to work on improvements on DisApp. New DisApp (find it on [fdroid](https://f-droid.org/en/packages/org.disroot.disrootapp/) ) introduces Disroot state notifications. Disroot state ([https://state.disroot.org](https://state.disroot.org) ) is a site where we publish scheduled maintenance and downtimes as well as issues, errors, software updates and other information about the health and state of the platform. You can follow it via RSS feed, email notifications as well as Hubzilla, diaspora*, Mastodon (fediverse in general) as well as Jabber/XMPP and Matrix. From now Disapp by massimiliano is added to this list. From new version 1.2.0 on, your phone will automatically inform you about new postings on Disroot state site. You will never miss info about when we are planning to reboot servers, or when things are broken and not working (and most importantly why).
Additionally for all those who like to see more detailed uptime information we have provided an additional board (powered by uptimerobot) via button on the bottom of [state](https://state.disroot.org) page or directly through [https://uptime.disroot.org](https://uptime.disroot.org)
## Discover
This is a new experiment we would like to try out. Disroot's community is full of amazing and interesting people and projects. In order to help those to create bigger communities, we've decided to dedicate a space in our regular blogposts for promoting interesting things disrooters are involved in. We want to help you guys create and broaden your communities and project as well as reach wider audience by using our platform. If you have anything interesting you would like to share with others, drop us a line at email: **discover_at_disroot.org**. We will then review it and publish when compiling new blog posts such as this one. (Remember we only promote non-profit and "copyleft" projects and work).
Our little platforms is fueled by coffee. Please consider becoming our regular contributor donating an equivalent of your favorite coffee (or other beverage). The entire project depends on your donations. Visit [our donation page](https://disroot.org/donate) to read more about ways you can donate and to check the financial overview.

It has been a very busy month. The summer here is ending and Disroot is entering a new chapter.
## New Website!
First of all we would like to point out that we have re-built and updated the website. It is now Javascript-free friendly so anyone should be able to view it without a problem.
We decided to dump the cumbersome Wordpress CMS for a new no-database flat-file CMS called Grav. We really recommend it for anyone who is building simple websites, because it is fast, easy to deploy and to use.
## [https://howto.disroot.org](https://howto.disroot.org)
We also launched [https://howto.disroot.org](https:/howto.disroot.org) - a better organized overview of all the tutorials. Up until now all tutorials were published on the forum which led to a big mess where information was hard to find. We think the new site solves that problem and will encourage Disrooters to submit more tutorials. The new website uses Git to submit and correct content which is super convenient. If you are not yet familiar with how Git works, we will soon provide a tutorial to explain the basics and how you can use it in the most simple way. We are also planning to eventually create possibilities to submit translations, so keep your eyes open if you want to help adding tutorials in your native language.
## Annual Report
With two years behind us, we made a resolution to be more organized and send a general report every year around the end of the summer. This is only partly connected to the fact that we will soon become an official foundation because actually it is something we've been wanting to sort out for a long time - we want to share as much information as we can with the people using this platform. You can read more what we've been doing so far, what we plan to do and what we want to do in the [Yearly Rapport](https://disroot.org/annual_reports/2017.pdf). This includes a short update on where we stand in the process of becoming a foundation.
## Becoming a foundation
Yup. It's on. We finally managed to gather enough funds, and found a missing person for the board. We have submitted the initial form and we have a meeting on 9th October to (hopefully) finalize our non-profit organization. It's a huge step for us and the project and we are very excited about it.
## Aliases, extra disk space, domain linking
One of the important aspect to becoming a not-for-profit foundation, is the ability to easily provide paid features to obtain financial stability. Many people have been asking us already if they can purchase extra disc space or use multiple aliases, so we set down and made some decisions about possibilities and costs. The following will be implemented in the month of October. We will eventually re-evaluate this model to see if it is sustainable enough (but don't worry - any changes to these extra perks we might decide to make will only affect future transactions).

- Extra space - 0.15euro/GB/month - At this point only available up to 50GB per account
- Aliases - 5 aliases for 24 euro/year
- Linking own domain to Email - 36 euro/year - including 10 aliases with own domain
## TOS and PrivacyPolicy
We finally published our [Terms Of Service](https://disroot.org/tos) and [Privacy Policy](https://disroot.org/privacy_policy). We tried to keep it simple and easy to read through. Let us know what you think so we'll try to improve upon your remarks.
## New apps on Nextcloud:
1. Nextcloud has now the Bookmark manager available. You can save you favorite web-pages and sync them across devices.
Available at the moment are clients for:
**Android:**
- Nextcloud Bookmarks - Android app with full add/edit/delete and view functionality
- NCBookmarks - App to view/edit/open bookmarks for Android
**Webbrowsers:**
- Floccus - Bookmark sync for Firefox/Chromium-based browsers
- A version for iOS is in the making, you can help testing it:  https://github.com/lenchan139/NCBookmark_iOS
2. Checksum app allows users to create a hash checksum of a file, which allows you to verify if the file content has changed.
## Disroot Community
Another thing we are very excited about is the Disroot community. Yes , it seems like such a thing has formed itself ( wow! ), and now it is time to get this ring of Disrooters active. Many people are asking us how they can help and contribute to the Disroot project. To make it easy we made a list of possible ways to [contribute](https://disroot.org/community#_contribute) so you can choose what is most suitable for you. For developers, we will soon release a list of wish-listed features we want to improve.
Our next sprint will start in October. Tomorrow we are leaving for a two week vacation, meaning we will be spending more time swimming and hiking then reading and typing. Obviously we will not loose connection and will check regularly for any issues that need immediate attention, but apart of that we are going to try to take it easy and enjoy ourselves.

As some of you might have heard, we have decided to partially discontinue our Matrix server. We discovered Matrix while trying to improve our XMPP server (ironically during the sprint called: *"To make XMPP great again!"*) and realized how great the potential of this new communication tool was. Now after running it nearly two years, we came to the conclusion that we did not give XMPP a fair chance and therefore we would like to shift our focus back to create a powerful XMPP server.
Though we still believe Matrix has the potential to become a great platform, there are several reasons why we cannot continue maintaining it at the moment. The resources needed for it cannot be provided without proper funding but that is not the only reason: Constant maintenance, resolving federation issues or general everyday problems are simply consuming too much of our time, energy and stress. But what is really drawing us to XMPP is how it is designed with the user's privacy as a central pillar. While the Matrix protocol is also taking the user's privacy seriously, it seems like its architectural focus is directed elsewhere, valuing usability over privacy. Matrix stores the data posted to any room indefinitely on all participating servers. User addresses are visible to anyone participating in the room (in case of public rooms, it basically means to anyone). We understand this is not meant for any malicious intention and is, at the moment, integral to the protocol - but, with the growing presence of various bots mapping the entire Matrix network and the growing presence of the alt-right in the network, we consider that problematic in our use case.
With XMPP, user IDs are hidden by default, unless enabled by room admins. The data can be stored on the server but can also be set to not be stored by admin and individually by users per room/contact case. Just like Matrix most of the XMPP clients/apps support end to end encryption. Data is stored only on one server, where the chat-room lives, which has both positive and negative sides. On the one hand it might seem too centralized and prone to failure, but on the other hand, it is nice to know where your data lives.
We know that XMPP is also not perfect, but it has been around for very long and we feel we need to give it a go and find for ourselves what are its downside in our use case. Hopefully we will find them minimal :)
We know some users who currently using Matrix would like to continue using it without the need to migrate their accounts (atm impossible) and their room aliases. We also don't want to shut all the doors because we might decide to come back to Matrix in the future (you never know).
Therefore we are not shutting down Matrix completely. This is what we plan to do:
1. New users can no longer login to Matrix
2. All room history of all public rooms will be purged to last 3 months of history
3. All users who have not login in last 2 months will be deleted (they will automatically exit the rooms, and their access to Matrix will be blocked)
4. Access to Matrix will be limited only to users who have been active in last 2 months
5. We will move Riot instance from https://chat.disroot.org to https://riot.disroot.org
6. We will keep purging history earlier then 3 month back of all public rooms and, when option of room history retention can be applied server wide, we will apply it on history older then 6 months for all rooms.
7. Naturally we will keep the software up to date.
With these actions we think we found a solution that does not harm existing users and gives us some breathing space to focus on other aspects of the Disroot platform. We thank you all for your understanding and support all along the way.

Hey all Disrooters! Are you all well, rested and prepared for the new year? We sure are, and can't wait for what is coming our way. We want to start the year by planning and deciding what we want to be busy with in the months to come.
## The 2020 plan
As always, this time we are also having some ambitious plans for this year. We have identified few themes we wanted to focus on.
1. **Email improvements**
We want to focus on a number of improvements of our email service. Starting from new and better webmail solution, bigger promotion of native email clients (apps) and focus on full support of Autocrypt in webmail as a promotional campaign of Autocrypt (easy user/app side independent end-to-end email encryption) not only for users but most importantly mail client developers, to stive for vider addoption of the solution. As we are getting more 'popular' we are more often attacked by spam, phishing and other nasty things ruining email experience. We want to focus on better anti-spam/virus solutions too.
2. **Mailbox encryption**
One of the things we have not managed to achieve last year is the mailbox encryption. This year we hope we will finally nail it. Initially we thought of server side encryption (where your private keys are stored on the server), however recently we started talking more and more about possibility to utilize GnuPG (gpg/pgp) as a way to end-to-end encrypt emails at rest (mailbox encryption). We hope we will be able to come up with solution that not only will serve Disrooters, but since it would be fully open sourced would allow any email server provider to utilize. No more closed silos. If we manage time will tell. As a fallback solution we will be working on server side mailbox encryption.
3. **Better administration**
One of the themes of last roadmap for 4th quarter of 2019 we started looking into ways to improve administration and way we handle support tickets, custom requests and all sort of routine tasks that consume more and more of our time. We also do realize that some of the tasks facing all of you (additional storage, custom domains etc) do not feel professional and take definitely too much time to be processed. We want to address all those things and improve as much as we can, so that your requests will be processed quick and professional and for us, all the routine daily tasks will not feel like a chore and we will have more time to focus on fun stuff like improving services we run.
4. **Onboard more admins**
For the last years Disroot was run by muppeth and antilopa who were responsible for everything Disroot (from website, daily tasks, administration, support, system administration, maintenance and all). Since last few months the Disroot team grew with additional force (fede and meaz in the core team and massimiliano and maryjane as volunteer close help). Already last roadmap we have started on defining and redistributing some of the tasks such as support tickets, translation project and howtos management, website building and so on. We want to continue this year by training and onboarding new core team members to allow them access to more production servers, to help with troubleshooting, maintenance and other tasks and requests that require production access to the servers.
5. **Launch Hubzilla**
Some of you know we have fallen in love in Hubzilla two years ago. We think it is a brilliant piece of software ahead of its time with great potential, offering features no other network provides. The moment we discovered the genius of Hubzilla, we wanted it to become our number one go to social network. Hubzilla needs a lot of love, and a lot of work to become service we can provide as go to social network for Disroot. After last two years we have not managed to get our test instance to the point where we would be satisfied with it. Getting hubzilla to desired state as a goal and priority will help get to the point where we can provide hubzilla to all disrooters.
6. **Funding**
Saying Disroot has not become our dayjob would be a lie. We spend on Disroot more time then we do on our actual day jobs. And since we need to maintain both, not to mention our families, other projects, hobbies and maybe some social life (which at this moment is not existing), we need to change this situation. Getting to the place where Disroot becomes our main occupation seems to be still far ahead, but we need to seriously start working towards it. Last year has exceeded our most enthusiastic expectations and showed us that the dream of financial independence is realistic. That is why we want to dedicate some time to explore ways how to make this dream come true.
## What's next ?
We have divided our plans into three month long roadmaps. Right now, we are busy working on laying the ground work for all the themes and we continue to work on tasks we have not managed to accomplish during the last months. Furthermore, we are refining all the plans in more detail to improve our working experience.

### Important!
**Changes in TOS:**
Due to growing abuse of our services (mainly email) by businesses, who find it convenient to use free volunteer based service provider for the purpose of profit generation, we have added the following section to our Terms Of Service:
> **Using Disroot services for commercial activities**<br>
Disroot is a non-profit organization providing services for individuals on "pay as you wish" basis. Because of this structure we see using Disroot services for commercial purposes as abuse of the service and it will be treated as such.
- Trading any Disroot services with a third party is prohibited.
- Using email for purposes such as "no-reply" type of accounts for a business will be blocked without a warning once such activity is detected
- Sending bulk emails, including but not limited to marketing and advertising, for business purposes, will be treated as spam and blocked upon discovery without any prior notice.
- Using Disroot services for financial gain, including but not limited to trading or managing sales, is not tolerated. Accounts created for the purpose of generating profits will be subject to termination upon inquiry.
- Using Disroot services for any other commercial activity will be examined per case and the decision on terminating such accounts will be based upon communication with the account holder and the type of the activities in question.
The new section will be put in practice starting from 1st of April. If you have questions, or are not sure if you fall under this new definition, please contact us.
<advertisement\> Any legit business that wish they could continue using such awesome service and support, please contact us per email to hear about our commercial offerings. </advertisement\>
### New servers
As some of you already know and have experienced, last months we were busy deploying new servers. This greatly improves overall performance of the Disroot platform as well as creates a very much needed resource buffer for the upcoming months. So without further ado meet:
Knopi - our main server - Dell R410:
- 32GB RAM
- 2x L5630
- 4x 8TB in HWRAID10 (16TB in totoal)
Nelly - our database server - Dell R610:
- 88GB RAM
- 2xE5520
- 6x512GB SSD in HWRAID10 (1.5TB Total)
The operation has taken much more time then expected and was not without mistakes, causing downtimes that could have been avoided. The sleepless nights spent in the data-center gave us a lot of experience that we surely will use next time we need to move or upgrade the infrastructure :) We would like to say we're very sorry for causing any inconvenience, and would like to thank the Disroot community for supporting us in those hard times.
### Nextcloud 13
The long awaited update to Nextcloud 13 has reached Disroot. What's new? Apart from typical performance boost, there are two major features lots of you were waiting for:
- Nextcloud Talk - Upgrade to the app formerly known as Spreed Calls (video/audio conferencing). Not only it has now a built in chat, but also a dedicated mobile app for managing your calls. This is still very fresh and we are looking forward to future integration with other Nextcloud apps. The rumor says Nextcloud Talk will be integrated with Matrix and XMPP. We are keeping our fingers crossed.
- End to End encryption - Is now working with Nextcloud files. Though still in alpha state and only available on Android sync client, it is possible to end-2-end encrypt your files (folder based). It is wise to be aware of its main drawback - not being able to use web-interface to access the e2e encrypted folder (it's encrypted all-right). **Please read the documentation and remember this is an early stage feature so keep a good backup of the files you intend to encrypt.**
https://nextcloud.com/endtoend/
### Extra storage space
Running out of space on your cloud or email? Finally we've got you covered. As of now you can request extra space for cloud or mailbox. Like we communicated in our previous announcement, the price per GB is 0.15euro/month and we will be first offering 14GB, 29GB, 54GB (total space) expansion. You can submit your requests via [this](https://disroot.org/en/forms/extra-storage-space) form.
### Finances
We have updated our finance chart. It looks very good! Thanks a lot to everyone who contributed so far! We were very excited to see that for the first time we were able to pay Disroot's monthly bills entirely from received donations. We hope we'll continue being surprised in the coming months too - so don't stop "buying us coffee" just yet. Furthermore, if we need to expand, upgrade hardware, get more servers (to be able to host more users and more services) we will need bigger funds. Remember, there is no such things as 'free' service and cloud is just a fancy word for someone else's computer.
### New Services?
We are getting a lot of requests for new services. We are also thinking of some additions ourselves. Naturally we can't facilitate all of them right away because of the hardware resources needed as well as work hours put into maintaining them. Given the limited resources we need to decide what is the most needed/anticipated service you would like to see on Disroot. We made a short list of services we are considering, have a look at [this](https://poll.disroot.org/ff3Qbrs1Kh74pHtN) poll and vote for your fav (no guarantees though). The poll will close on the 15th of April.
<br><br>
**In the coming month we are going to take things a little easier and focus on small maintenance and general spring cleaning.**
**We would like to wish everybody great spring celebrations, and for those of you in the southern hemisphere - cozy autumn nights.**

We begun the new year with a big kick. The amount of work both private, professional and Disroot related has become huge. We are psyched and excited about all the things in our lives so we wanted to share with you what is going on and what we are busy with these days.
<br><br>
Our daughter project [apt-get shirt](https://aptgetshirt.com) is progressing slowly but surely. Last year we decided that outsourcing the shirt printing process is way too expensive for the amounts of shirts we sell and so we decided to build our own production facilities. We have finally finished building a DIY silkscreen printing press and are looking forward to the moment we can self-produce shirts for all the **free/libre/open source software** projects out there. You can follow **"apt-get shirt"** on the fediverse on: [mastodon](https://social.tchncs.de/@aptgetshirt), [hubzilla/Diaspora/Friendica](https://hub.disroot.org/channel/aptgetshirt) as well as evil [twitter](https://twitter.com/aptgetshirt) if you must. Also while you're at it, grab some shirts from our [web store](https://aptgetshirt.com), our closet is still full of shirts from the first badge.
<br><br>
Our life project has become real too. Both *Muppeth* and *Antilopa* are going to build an Open Source house with their own hands. We are going to use pioneering building technique called [wikihouse](https://wikihouse.cc/) ( [video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4fB3SFgKPog) ) which is totally open source technology. @antilopa for last weeks has been busy preparing all drawings and plans for our future home. We are going to document the entire process, including building plans, files ready to cut on CNC and assemble the house, the entire process of building the house, etc). You can follow us on the [fediverse](https://hub.disroot.org/channel/wikidom) (wikidom@hub.disroot.org)
<br><br>
@muppeth has been busy at his dayjob last weeks migrating the entire organization he works for to Nextcloud. Yup baby! this is contagious and spreading. It's a very good experiment from our point of view to experience and see how Nextcloud, with its amazing apps suit for office use, will fit the needs of group management in a proper job setting as a replacement to corporate solutions. So far the general feedback is very positive.
<br><br>
As you can see crazy amount of exciting things. That does not mean nothing is happening with Disroot. And since this is what it's all about, let's see whats cookin'
### Nextcloud 15.
Those of you who use it probably noticed one or two adjustments to the design of the cloud. Yes, Nextclouds interface is evolving. The most notable differences are the addition of a grid view in Files (especially useful when dealing with images) and the new top bar. On the security side of things Nextcloud now provides phone notification as second factor (approve a login on your phone or desktop client!) which can be selected in your options.
<br><br>
Sharing has also gotten a number of new features and design changes.
- Unlimited amount of share links - create multiple share links to your folder or file to keep better control over it.
- View-only documents. - to prevent others from editing and even downloading files.
- Talk integration - Now you can start a video call or a chat in connection to the file you are working on directly from the file menu.
### New howto.disroot.org structure.
Together with few disrooters that are active in writing and translating tutorials we decided to change the general structure of the [howto](https://howto.disroot.org) website. This was an outcome of our first howto-team conference. The call utilized 100% Disroot infrastructure, which we are very excited about (stretching from Europe to South America). We used Jitsi which you can find and use under [https://calls.disroot.org](https://calls.disroot.org) . Jitsi will be added to the website soon.<br>
Fede has come up with a new structure that we believe will help find needed information and offer a clear overview. We just rolled it out and will now focus on defining what howtos are missing, which ones are outdated and start scheduling the work. To keep track of things we will utilize a Taiga board so anyone can join in, pick up a task and help out. If you want to get in touch with other disrooters working on tutorials and translations you should head on to our jabber channel at xmpp:howto@chat.disroot.org or via our experimental [webchat](https://webchat.disroot.org/#converse/room?jid=disroot@chat.disroot.org) (something we want to fix up in coming days).<br>
We have also started discussing how could we contribute our work upstream. Our howto website covers a lot of services and it would be a waste if it would have been only exclusive to Disroot users. With streamlining and unifying the texts we hope to develop an easy way for anyone out there to transform those howtos for their own project or needs (service providers, project pages etc)
Thanks Fede for amazing job and commitment!
### Whats next?
To begin with, we will continue to cleanup and work on internal improvements to the setup. We have answered all questions pending our support queue which due to high workloads kept piling up for weeks (sorry if you happen to be a victim of such delay), we are reviewing, updating and re-planing our Taiga board to be more efficient and transparent.
We are also focusing on streamlining configurations, dealing with pending issues and improvements. And although we are slightly delayed, we are on track with preparations for service-side mailbox encryption.
<br><br>
Cheers!

**Ehhhh SSL.**
As we are working on writing Ansible roles to automate most of the work done on disroot platform. We thought its great opportunity to update all our HTTPS certificates with letsencrypt. Last week we started implementing Letsencrypt ansible role on disroot platform, not realising our certificates are about to expire. And today was the day. We woke up to Disroot being crippled by inaccessible websites due to expired certs. Just a few days before our ansible role was polished, tested and put in production. We quickly re-issued most of the certificates with STARTSSL to extinguish the fire.
In next week or so we will move entire infrastructure to letsencrypt, meaning that certificate renewal nightmare will be a thing of the past.
Hope the downtime was not that noticeable. After all its Sunday

**Are you bored yet?**
Since lots of you (us included) are locked in their houses trying to avoid contact with other human beings, we thought it would be nice to spend this time socializing in front of computer with bunch of strangers you know so well from chats, social federated networks and whom you most probably never seen in real life.
Let's spend an evening drinking booze, eating junk, and shooting one another on Teeworlds. **The first edition of Quarantine with Disroot starts on Saturday 21.03.2020 20:00 CET** and will go on until last one standing. Server will probably stay on for the whole week or two if there are people willing to play.
## Let's kick some CoVID butt.![](splashtee3.png)
----
**Quick guide:**
1. To get you started, install Teeworlds either using your package manager if you are using a proper operating system like linux/bsd or go to teeworlds [website](https://teeworlds.com/?page=downloads) and download it for your platform.
2. Once you're done with that, start the game.
3. Fisrt select "Setup" to add your players name, choose and customize your Tee is you like.
4. Hit play and find **"Quarantine with Disroot"** and join us.
The game is rather straight forward and easy to learn, and since probably we are all noobs, no worries we will equally suck at it :)

As we mentioned in the previous post, for the last two plus weeks we've been busy working on getting the registrations back up and running. We hope the process is not too complex and that we will manage to cope with the extra workload the manual approval process brings. We've written bunch of tools that should help us make this process as easy and fast as we possibly can. We will be reviewing new user requests once a day so prepare for few hours of wait time when creating new user.
Lets all hope this process will appear to be working well and we won't be forced to rethink the whole approach again. Time will tell.
Automated delete account process.
While working and thinking on new user registration system, we thought of a way to turn current delete account system to fully automated one. Currently user deletion system is pretty much a manual work, where we remove user accounts and data on weekly basis. This is hardly ideal. Users had to fill in the form, reply to email etc. and since we had to do the actual deletion manually, we often (usually) lagged with the process as more important things came first. From now on, you can finally remove your account via [https://user.disroot.org](https://user.disroot.org) - your account will be disabled immediately and all the data will be removed within 48h automatically. You can already use it, though the auto-deletion of user data will be in place in coming days as we haven't finish it entirely yet.
**What's planned for next two weeks?**
Next weeks we want to focus on few service updates which require more custom work then usual:
Hubzilla just got a pretty big update, changing the approach from fairly complex settings system to much easier one to use. This means we need to test it and make sure our pre-defined settings for new users stay intact.
Taiga and Discourse needs quite some work as the updates are blocked by manual custom changes we need to apply in order to get them to work. Something we wanted to automate for a long time and we just simply cant postpone it any longer.
Nextcloud needs a lot of love. For last months we've observed quite a jump in Nextcloud usage which also means amount of resources needed. Apart from updating Nextcloud to version 14, we want to start working on some improvements, optimizations and changes that will allow for smoother performance and most importantly lower resource footprint.
cheers!

Hello again. We are round the corner to 2021 which hopefully will be much better than the nightmare that has been this year.
It's been a while since the last post again. Somehow weeks are passing like days this year and in the mist of all the work both in Disroot and our professional and personal lives it's hard to keep track of everything and somehow we have not managed to be more active in blogging. Let's blame Covid for it as long as we can :)
As always tons of new things and ideas we wanted to share with you. Starting with **Roadmap Q4.** As always very ambicious given the current work load. But this time we won't put ourselves down for not meeting deadlines. It's more of an indicator of what we need to do rather then trying the constant crunch we've done previously (and failed). We have split the roadmap into specific themes we want to focus on:
* **Roundcube migration** - Long announced and something we haven't managed to do last few months. We set the goal to migrate somewhere between now and end of the year. Roundcube is webmail we've posted about some time back ([post here](https://disroot.org/en/blog/roundcube))
* **Improvements to administration** - We want to focus on improving the way we deal with custom requests such as custom domain linking, aliases, extra storage, forums, etc. We want to improve the process, make it more robust and easier both from user perspective but also (and most importantly) from administration perspective. Additionally we want to focus on number of things in regards to bookkeeping, administration, creating financial overviews and other things which, as much as are needed and important, are very annoying, time consuming tasks which some of us (Antilopa) need to carry on their shoulders and have barely any time for actual fun stuff with Disroot. We are here to have fun and chores should be minimal. Therefore we all want to release Antilopa from the role, where she needs to struggle with everyday administrative stuff, automate as much as possible, but also make it all easier and more smooth user facing.
* **Mailbox encryption** - In the beginning of the year we have set a goal to start the work on mailbox encryption. After some investigations, we have settled for end to end encryption as oppose to serverside encryption and we have also decided what will we use for it. We will base our idea on gpg mailgate solution which seems to not be maintained for a while but we find it to be almost complete solution. We plan to have a working POC (*Proof of Concept*) before the end of the year. You can follow the progress of the project [here](https://git.disroot.org/Disroot/gpg-mailgate)
* **Onboarding core team** - An ongoing process of onboarding Fede and Meaz, training, creating procedures, scripts, documentation to further offload Muppeth and Antilopa and enable more collaboration. This enables us to react faster to issues, process custom requests, and have more time to develop more stuff and improve disroot overall.
* **Ansible** - Last months we have done quite some work on some of the ansible roles and we are now running a lot of them in production, trying to keep it this way and prevent custom manual settings tweaks. This enables us to have clear overview of the setup, unified settings across all servers and it will allow us to deploy software faster and in automated fashion. Additionally, we want to publish them this year so that others can make use of it and we could in that way support deployment of more independent Disroot-like nodes around further contribution to decentralization of the internet.
Looks ambitious, sounds ambitious and most certainly it is ambitious. We will do our best to at least accomplish some of the tasks and push forward others. If we manage to get everything done, we deserve a big pat in the back. And a strawberry cake :)
# Ditch SCRUM - internal experiment to give ourself some breathing time / Dogfood Nextcloud Deck
Hokay. Long title for this one but the idea is pretty simple. Since the beginning of Disroot's existance we have incorporated ideas of continuous development in our workflow. We worked in periods of four (or two) weeks where we made a todo list based on the backlog and tried to finalize it. This way of working as much as it is suitable in situations where you can spend full time on the project is quite effective, but for us for a while became sort of a nightmare we've created ourselfs. We simply could not keep up with our planning. Most certainly it was due to bad planning and management, but in such small team of people working in their free time, additionally holding scrum meetings, standups, working as the executors but also scrum masters and product owners has depleted our capacity and lowered morale in the team. So we decided that perhaps continuing with this isn't what we should do but perhaps rather look for alternative ways to of planning and collaboration.
Since the [recent post](https://disroot.org/en/blog/deck) from **Avg_joe** about **Deck**, we have been wanting to try it out more. And what's better than dogfood it on a project such as Disroot. We have decided that for the period of this roadmap we will be using Deck to coordinate work on Disroot. Sadly at this moment Deck boards cannot be shared in public but hopefully this will change soon. So, since Deck does not implement the scrum ideas and it is rather just a simple kanban board, we have decided to drop the entire Scrum for now too.
We do still meet every two weeks to discuss the current progress, talk about ideas and share issues, but we do not focus so much on administrative part of the meeting (discuss backlog, prepare up coming sprints, etc) at least not in the crazy crunchy pace we used to. This seem to be giving us a bit of breathing space and, although we are as busy with Disroot as always, it seems like we aren't chasing the rabbit anymore (continuously trying to finish current sprint as new one is around the corner). Time will tell if we feel ok with this approach but at least the change itself was very needed for the well being of the team.

Dear Disrooters:
Starting from June 8th, we are going to replace the current webmail (powered by **Rainloop**) with a brand new toy powered by **Roundcube**.
For the last 4 years we have been using **Rainloop** for our webmail experience. But due to some missing features and a need to improve the platform's integration, we have decided to re-introduce a webmail environment built on **Roundcube**.
**Roundcube** has been widely used for the last 10 years and it provides the modern, fast, simple and reliable solution one could expect. Here are some feature highlights:
* A nice responsive Disroot flavored skin (and dark mode)
* Better filter support
* Email and mailbox archiving
* Custom themes
* The interface is translated in more than 80 languages.
* Drag-&-drop message management: move your messages with your mouse.
* Full support for MIME and HTML messages.
* Attachment previews: see the images directly within your messages.
* Threaded message listing: Display conversations in a threaded mode.
* Folders: Manage your folders (add, remove, or hide).
* Two factor authentication: add a second level of authentication to your account log-in.
And many more...
In the near future we are planning to integrate it with mailbox encryption as well as **Nextcloud** (calendars, contacts and attachments) and other services currently provided by **Disroot**. We think **Roundcube** will enable us to further improve your email experience.
We hope you'll like the new looks and new features. We sure are looking forward to this switch and future improvements.
**!! Warning for 2FA users!!**
For those of you that have 2FA enabled on the current webmail, you will have to re-set it up again once the new webmail is up and running. Sorry for the inconvenience!

**Dear disrooters,**
Its been a while since you heard from us last time. At least some of you. Last months weve been very bad in informing you about the changes. We blame matrix for it 😛 Weve been very active on our latest additional service — where quite a nice community has formed — and kept on postponing the usual updates forever. We will do our best that it doesnt happen again, and to keep you up to date on all communication channels from now on.
Last months have been truly busy at Disroot. The entire palette of emotions was accompanying us through that time. From uber awesomeness and fun, to sweat, tears, frustration and broken keyboards.
Here are some things weve been working on:
---------------------
## Matrix is live!
Like we announced in previous posts, weve deployed Matrix as Disroots default chat. From the very beginning we were positively surprised by the new community that was forming around the young chat platform and the active involvement of Disrooters. A lot of you helped us by adding interesting chatrooms from other servers, find and fix a lot of bugs and issues not only on matrix itself but on all other services on the Disroot platform. Thanks a lot guys!
That said, our experience with Matrix wasnt all sweets and candy. Matrix has caused us a lot of stress and work as we were experiencing federation issue with the biggest server hosted by matrix.org. Messages from users on matrix.org side would lag for hours or not ever reach our server, causing a lot of frustration for users and making the whole federation concept feel like a fail. However, together with matrix.org developers weve managed to troubleshoot the issue and for last weeks matrix has been stable and the federation to matrix.org was re-established. As this was a never-ending three-week-long nightmare, we keep an eye on it so if it ever occurs again we know what to do.
For all of you who would like to join the Matrix, say hi, or just chat about anything, pop into our Disroot room (#disroot:disroot.org), any other public room or just create your own and invite your friends.
-------------------
## Howtos and Tutorials
We also spent few weeks in january/february writing lots of documentation: [https://disroot.org/tutorials/](https://disroot.org/tutorials/). Thanks to help from maryjane and dosch weve managed to cover most of the services offered by Disroot. There is still long way to go as we are still missing some needed tutorials and we would like to create instructional videos for all those that dont like reading that much. Its definitely a step in the right direction and something we were missing for a long time. Please have a look and if you feel inspired to write some Howtos, dont hesitate and just do it. If you want to coordinate it with us, ask on our matrix room or use any other means to contact us [https://disroot.org/contact](https://disroot.org/contact)
------------------------
## Nextcloud 12.
Weve just updated Nextcloud to the glorious version 12. Weve also updated to php7 and latest Nginx which enables us to use HTTP/2. Most importantly, there is a noticeable performance boost with the new update (we are still tweaking the settings).
As always there are lots of new functionalities and User Interface. You can read in detail about it here: https://nextcloud.com/blog/welcome-to-nextcloud-12/
Changes worth noting:
- **App order** To order your apps, you now need to do it in your personal settings.
- **Calls** Apart from Screen notification about new call invites (soon on mobile too) you can also share screen with others. Makes things much better when having a meeting or when you troubleshoot your mothers Linux desktop
- **Circles** Private cloud at your service. Create groups of friends you want to share files with, or public group anyone can join. The app is still in early stages so expect a lot of changes and new features soon.
- **Sharing directly to your social networks** Now you can share to your Diaspora*, g+, Facebook, Twitter and Email
- **Working together** possibility to lock the file you are working on so others wont overwrite your changes if you work in a group.
--------------------------
## [https://state.disroot.org](https://state.disroot.org)
For a while now we were looking for possibility to inform you guys about the state of all the services and possible issues or updates. Also we wanted to have an easy way to inform about scheduled downtimes and upgrades. Thanks to Cachet project we can do just that. It gives a pretty overview of the state of all services we run, plus it shows all changes on a timeline. From now on, if you want to know about the upcoming downtimes (services unavailable), issues, updates etc in one place, check state.disroot.org. You can subscribe to RSS feed or email to get notified about everything (or only services you are interested in) directly without a need to enter the website. Weve also created a Matrix room at #state:disroot.org where we re-post things from cachet and in the future we hope to be able to re-post to diaspora too.
--------------------------
## Becoming a legal entity
As most of you know, Disroot is currently run by few people personally responsible for the entire project. We would like to turn it into a non-profit organizations as it will make our life easier in terms of legal advice, taxes, possible future subpoenas, asking for funding, collecting donations and selling merchandise or extra storage. Seeing as Disroots userbase is growing faster and faster we need to secure our financial and legal status in order to handle the load and growth. Last months we did quite a progress on things and we hope, by this time next month Disroot will become a foundation.
A special thanks for the party organizers that threw a very successful benefit rave for us! The cash will help us with the process of becoming a foundation and will cover some of our costs from last year \♥/
As always, if you wish to donate money or hardware to the project visit: [https://disroot.org/donate/](https://disroot.org/donate/) Weve made a short financial overview for 2016 which doesnt look so good. in order for 2017 to be better, we need you to grab your wallets and throw some money at us. Donating even 1euro a month (or whatever your currency is) makes huge change. If everyone does that we will never have to worry about the financial state of the project.
If you can, please dont use PayPal. We would like to promote an alternative awesome open source project called liberapay.com where you can support us and other projects with your contributions.
### And in this summery mood, we wish you happy days and self gardened vegetables.

# New Features in mail, forum and owncloud
Its been a quick week here at disroot. Weve announced our project to diaspora community making it kind of official. Weve received quite some positive feedback and constructive criticism for which we are very grateful. Not wasting too much time we jumped to work and fixed some things that we had on our list.
## Transparent Development
After the last meeting with the disroot crew we decided to put some structure to the way we work. We will organize our work in 3 week sprints. It means every three weeks well plan work for coming period by picking tasks from our backlog and adding them to our board.
We want to be as open about things we do as possible, so we made our kanban board public. Here, you can follow the progress of each task that was planned for current sprint. This gives opportunity to everyone to be more familiar with what we do, give better (more) feedback but also maybe take responsibility for few tasks here and there and help us out.
## New Features
1. owncloud [https://cloud.disroot.org](https://cloud.disroot.org)
added xmpp (chat) support. Now you can make use of webchat with otr encryption and chatroom functionality.
2. roundcube [https://mail.disroot.org](https://mail.disroot.org)
added xmpp (chat) support.
added sieve functionality. Now you can create rules to sort out your email automatically. Just go to “Settings” > “Filters” and “Add” filter rules. Those rules will apply to any and every mail client you are using.
3. discourse [https://forum.disroot.org](https://forum.disroot.org)
Now you can easily use discourse as both your mailing-list and forum:
reply to the topic with email. Everytime you get notification on the topic you are following you can reply to it straight from the email.
create topics via email By sending mail to email alias assigned to your group you can create a topic. No need to login to the interface. Please contact admins if you want this functionality.
To post to disroot category just send email to forum@disroot.org
4. mail
POP3 you can now use pop3 protocol for disroot email. Use port is 995 and enable SSL.
Default folders Draft, Inbox, Sent, Trash, Junk folders are created for every email account by default
Sieve Creating filters for your emails (currently exposed only to roundcube but affecting all mail clients)
Spamassasin To prevent you getting tons of spam weve put a guard to kill em before they reach you. Please let us know if you are getting emails not flagged as spam when they should have.
ClamAV and amavis Open source virus scanners for emails.
5. chat
Added offline messaging support so you dont miss anything when you are offline.

# New logo, donation page, backup system
This sprint have passed really fast. Mostly we did a lot of work on behind the scenes functionality such as backup solution, and service monitoring. We also made a start with writing our internal documentation. Antilopa made awesome logo which we will implement in all services together with unifying the overall user experience during next few sprints.
Last but not least, we made it possible to receive donations \o/ By throwing money at us you help maintain the project as well as make it possible to grow so that more people can make use of it.
##New on Disroot
**Disroot Logo** Yes we have a brand new logo thanks to Antilopa. In coming sprints it will be incorporated into all the services as a part of unifying all interfaces. We hope you like the new logo as much as we do. https://forum.disroot.org/uploads/default/original/1X/bcac8e8149cab628e12dc92d14d7e05dd6690e4b.png
**Donation page** For all the people asking us where they can donate money, we finally have an answer: Here
**Email Server auto-detect settings** Now your Thunderbird and Outlook (anyone with windows machine that could actually test this one for us?) should auto-magically detect our email server settings, so no need to remember the actual server address, port number etc.
**Internal Service Monitoring** Weve setup icinga2 to monitor the health of the servers as well as all the processes and services running on it. Whenever there is a problem we immediately get notified so that our response time is much shorter as we are aware of problems right away.
**Improved Backup solution** We are now running backups to remote server. Backup servers data disks are encrypted (as well as disroot server btw). Here is an overview of what and when we backup:
- Daily user data and databases we make daily backup of all user data and databases to remote server
- Weekly rotate the data collected during the week on backup server is then compared with the main server once a week and synchronized so that all the files deleted by user during that time from the server is then deleted on the backup machine as well, to prevent us from storing files we are not suppose to have anymore.
- Monthly Operating systems backup. we are doing monthly system upgrades of all of our virtual machines / containers running disroot services. Before and after this operation the operating systems are backed up locally (before system update), remotely (after successful system upgrade)
We are looking forward to our sprint 2 8.09.2015 30.09.2015

taxonomy:
category: news
tag: [disroot, news, nextcloud]
body_classes: 'single single-post'
---
**Hi there.**
Its been a while since you heard form us about whats new in disroot. Dont think we were lazy doing nothing, in fact we were extremely busy the last months finishing the most important and time consuming tasks of this year.
## Disroot is 1 year old!
We would like to celebrate with you the fact that Disroot has been running for a whole full year \o/ We are happy that we were able to develop the project and make all these wonderful tools available to anyone. We hope we can keep improving and growing next year and that you will all stick with us for many year to come. For an overview of what has been done so far go to [https://forum.disroot.org/c/disroot/disroot-changelog](https://forum.disroot.org/c/disroot/disroot-changelog).
## Server migration.
On September 19th Disroot became a truly independent project running on self owned hardware. We have successfully migrated all the services to new servers in a new datacenter, to which we have 24/7 access and full control over our machines. The most obvious reason to own our own hardware is the independence and flexibility this give us to run this project. Until the move we have been renting a server at one of the hosting providers in the Netherlands. Thanks to a server donation from a good friend, we decided its high time to put those old servers back in use. We scraped some money together and bought brand new harddrives, RAM and we were ready for deployment. Well, at least with hardware. Moving all the services was way more complex. We used the opportunity to introduce some automation to the way we deploy and manage all the disroot services. We decided to work with Ansible and automate most configurations. This took great amount of time, but in long term gave as flexibility and clear overview on how everything is set up. Once our deployment scripts and ansible roles mature enough we intend to release self-deploy images so that anyone could also host his/her very own disroot instance.
## Terms of Service
You might remember our callout to comment and review a draft of Disroots Term of Services. Despite low external input, we have decided to declare the TOS ready and to implement it as is. Soon you will be prompted to accept the new Terms of Use before proceeding to use disroot services. Obviously, we are still open for suggestions and comments and out always ready to improve the terms. You can find the agreement on [https://disroot.org/tos](https://disroot.org/tos) .
We are still working on the Privacy Policy so keep your eyes open for that one too.
## Operation Nextcloud
As mentioned before (see [https://disroot.org/disroot-goes-nextcloud/](https://disroot.org/disroot-goes-nextcloud)), recent changes in ownCloud project and the development of the new fork Nextcloud, led us to follow the majority of the community and core developers and move to the promising project of Nextcloud. Once we were done with server migration, we immediately started with the preparations to change clouds. First of we had to get rid of all the pending bugs that were already reported. Once this was off the table, we proceeded to test all existing apps plus work on implementing new features. On 16th October we have finally migrated to Nextcloud.
**What does it mean for you?**
First of, you probably noticed refreshed interface. There are also new mobile/desktop apps available (check fdroid for free versions). Though your current owncloud mobile/desktop apps are still compatible, we recommend to switch to nextcloud apps as those will provide extended functionalities in the future.
Apart of all that, weve also launched new service accessible within the cloud — Spreed.me — which lets you host audio/video conferences with your friends, co-workers etc. We would like to hear your feedback on this new feature, so test it out and tell us what you think.
For more details on current and brand new cloud features check our page here: https://disroot.org/cloud/
## Updates and Improvements
**Diaspora**
Diaspora has been updated to the long awaited version 0.6.x This release brings a lot of changes including a beautiful new interface and a better synchronization with other pods. This means that public posts are published and synced among big and small pods alike and tags are better searched now over the many pods out there.
**Searx (search.disroot.org)**
Searx got a new UI and an extra set of search engine plugins that can be switched on. One of the top new design improvements is the infinite scroll. Yep, no more clicking “Next page” button. Just toggle the option on in Preferences >> Plugins >> Infinite scroll and enjoy.
**Taiga (board.disroot.org)**
Apart of a new improved UI, public projects are now viewable and browsable for everyone directly on the main page. Just switch your project to “public” if you want to show your stuff to the world.
**Lufi (upload.disroot.org)**
Now you can enjoy improved upload and download speeds.
## Upcoming:
Next sprint theme is “Make XMPP great again”. We want to focus on bringing as many improvements and features as possible to our chat instance and we hope to create user experience up to date and to current standards (say bye bye to skype and whatsapp).
In upcoming weeks/months were also planning to focus on preparing more tutorials, videos and howtos to help you get as much as possible from our services.

**Dear disrooters,**
Last weeks we were busy adding new services and features to the disroot platform. At this moment we have all the services we were planning to host (at least for now) set up and ready to use. We have one more project in mind (loomio.org) but well consider it more seriously somewhere next year if we still have enough resources (server space) to host it. For now we still have a lot planned for the upcoming two months.
## So what in our road map for the near future?
We would like to focus on improving disroots features so it can become a better platform for groups, collectives, non-profit organizations and communities. We want to create a a set of tools for group members (admins) to easily add/remove users, user groups domain-names etc.
We want to introduce single sign on service where users would be logged in to all services at once.
We are also planning a lot of user interface integration, so you could use all the disroot goodies from one place.
Last but not least. We want to create as many tutorials and howtos as we can to make it easier for all of you to use and integrate our services with your computers, laptops and mobile devices. If you like writing things, you might consider giving us a helping hand. [Forum](https://forum.disroot.org) is at your disposal.
We hope to be ready to launch disroot for groups in the beginning of 2016. Stay tuned.
## Whats new in disroot?
New features:
1. **Forum** Users can now use disroot account to register and login to the forum.
2. **Webmail** Webmail is now integrated with cloud (owncloud).
3. **Cloud** New version of owncloud brings some new features such as: improved user interface and new gallery application.
4. **Etherpad** has been updated with a set of nice new features and plugins.
## New Services:
[search.disroot.org](https://search.disroot.org) powered by the Searx project, a metadata anonymous search engine. It searches your queries using all kind of search engines (Google, Yahoo, Bing, TPB, Duckduckgo etc) and shows you all the results in one window. Furthermore, it prevents those search engines from creating user profiles based on your searches. You can add our search to your browser by following link. Read more…
[upload.disroot.org](https://upload.disroot.org) an encrypted file upload and share service powered by Lufi. You can now upload files for maximum time of 60 days and share it with others using a link. No registration is required. All files are encrypted before they land on our servers to provide perfect balance between privacy and comfort. Read more…
[poll.disroot.org](https://poll.disroot.org) Online service for planning an appointment or making a decision quickly and easily. No registration is required! This service is powered by Framadate.
**Note!** We are still testing it. There are some issues we know of and we are trying to resolve them as soon as possible. However we thought you can give it a try already. What doesnt work then? You cannot modify your choices. Check the progress on the matter here
[board.disroot.org](https://board.disroot.org) Project management board for your group! With this tool you can get an overview of your current projects state, set tasks to accomplish and assign them to your team members. Planning has never been that fun! *(Sprint 44-45-46)*
<br><br>
This blogpost has been overdue for two months! Somehow, even though it was drafted it kept on being pushed down the priority list into the abyss of forgotten tasks. Time to dig it out and post a portion of things we've been working on lately.
## Roadmap Q4 2019
We start with improvements to our internal organizational structure. That's why we have decided to create a roadmap for the last quarter of this year. This, we hope, will enable us to plan our work better and have a clear vision and goals ahead. Our intention is to continue this way of planning in 2020 and beyond. The idea is to have two types of roadmaps:
- **Quarterly** - where we set short term goals, focus on specific projects
- **Half yearly** - In order to not loose the sight of the big picture, we want to set long term goals twice a year to better organize our work, goals and vision for the project.
<br><br>
We noticed that we often tend to de-rail our focus, or neglect some parts of the project as a consequence of limited resources and no clear plan/vision. Roadmaps will help us keep our attention towards a common goal. How well we'll do, time will tell.
<br><br>
**So what are we going to focus on the rest of this year?**
<br><br>
Between September and December, we want to finalize organizational and structural work we have already started working on: (re)structuring the internal organization, the way we work, interact, make decision, share responsibilities. This means thinking of best solutions, documenting them, improving our workflows and procedure as well as working out a more effective administration. Additionally we want to focus on small improvements on UX (user experience) and UI (user interface) specially during the onboarding process. Running **Disroot** for quite a while makes us feel more detached from the days we started or initially joined the platform as users. We have defined some of the topics and we are still gathering feedback on possible improvements. Another very important thing is cleaning up, automating and improving all server side related jobs. **Disroot** keeps stealing more and more precious time from admins and introducing standardization, automation, scripting and bettering daily work will help us get some of that time back which we could use to further enhance services and contribute our improvements upstream.
<br><br>
To follow the progress of the roadmap check our [Epic on taiga](https://board.disroot.org/project/disroot-disroot/epic/2167)
## Improvements in support ticketing system
**Meaz** worked hard to bring order to the ticket queue. Lately it had became very chaotic which affected our response times, as well as caused some tickets to 'get missing' in the pile. The result of the cleaning generated a procedure for its handling, created detailed ticket queues and introduced shifts, where each week someone takes the role of "ticket master" who will be the first line support person delegating tickets, making sure they are answered in reasonable time and most importantly prevent 'missing' ones. It will definitely help us to be more efficient.
## Donations to FLOSS
Our last donation to FLOSS projects was in May. We've been putting aside an amount of money based on the goal calculation, and now it's about time to send another batch of money to the projects. This time we have decided to donate to: **Hubzilla, ConverseJS, Etherpad, Framasoft, DavX5, Nextcloud bounties** *(not released yet)*, **Conversations and Debian**. *(donations should be paid out in coming days)*
<br><br>
Below is the overview of all donations we made to all the projects this year. For up to date overview of our finances, as well as number of disrooters sponsoring the cause and overview of donations we've made to FLOSS projects, check our [donation page](https://disroot.org/donate)
![](donated.png)
Thank you all for your great support, and big shoutout to all those FLOSS developers working countless hours for better, more open software ♥♥♥
## New Front page
**Meaz** and **Antilopa** were busy working on new refreshed look of our Front page. We like it very much and we hope you like it too. This is a first step in series of tasks where we focus on unifying the looks, both of the website as well as services.
## Opt-in password reset email
One of the most re-occurring support question is about password reset. Many of you have registered an account and by the time you got approved you have forgotten your password, resulting in a locked out account. As much as we do not want to collect third party email addresses it seems like the only way. So from now on, during the registration you can choose to use the verification email address (which is normally wiped upon approval/denial from our databases) to be used as a "reset password" email address. You can also set it at later stage via https://user.disroot.org by logging in and selecting "Update account information" option. Remember this is entirely **Optional** and if you do not need nor want to share with us your external email address, you do not have to do it (keep your passwords safe and you won't need any of that).
## Our git instance
For a while we have been discussing whether to move our current git repositories which we host at our friends at [Fosscommunity India](https://git.fosscommunity.in) elsewhere. We really like the simplicity of Gitea specially, when we did not use pretty much any extra features that come with Gitlab and are not fond of the UI. While looking for new home, we came to the conclusion that perhaps selfhosting our own git instance could be the most beneficial for us, our translation/howto crew and actually anyone within the community who is looking for home for their code. We are still working out last details before we go live, but we hope to finalize it and migrate the **Disroot**'s website and howtos to the new git instance this week.
You can already check it out and if you want, register at https://git.disroot.org We have decided on separate login method (you can't use your **Disroot** credentials) because we think that in order to stimulate cooperations from non-disrooters, having to go through entire effort of creating **Disroot** account just to submit a bug report or commit is not going to encourage people. Furthermore, we are considering adding github/gitlab logins to further make it easier for outsiders to collaborate.
## Coming up...
Past weeks **Fede** is taking a lead in working on a new version of our current Privacy Policy which we hope will make the policy more clear and more detailed. **Meaz** is doing more website tweaks, while **Antilopa** is working on a proper "house style" GUI guides. **Muppeth** has been busy last weeks on improving, documenting and fixing server setup.

*[Sprint 49 - Changement de saison]*
What a roller-coaster the last weeks were!
We start from a gigantic **fire** that has been eating through our server the past two and half weeks. It was all caused by the upgrade of PHP (the backend that powers our Nextcloud service). We knew it was a problematic one because we already have observed the anomaly in the past and decided to roll back to previous version of it. Even though we already took steps to protect our setup by updating our webserver configuration, the recently discovered vulnerability and the rumors of ransomware in the wild that encrypts entire instances, convinced us to go on an update the underlying PHP - just to be on the safe side . This, as we expected, resulted in our server working at maximum power, causing the entire cloud to slow down to a crawl. After much tests, tweaks, sleepless days and nights trying to find the root cause we have identified it and put a temporary fix in place. At the same time we communicated this to the development team at Nextcloud and now we are waiting for a permanent fix. The much needed **water** extinguished the fire and brought stability back to the platform.
All this, and the fact that our outside Disroot's responsibilities such as dayjobs, families and other projects became more demanding, made us realize that keeping our current pace of constant work - the continuous cycle of two week sprints, continuously improving the platform, responding to all the support tickets, requests, engaging in conversations via chats, social networks and what have you - definitely cannot continue in the current setting or it will lead us to total burnout in the near future. Unless Disroot becomes our main occupation, which in fact it already is as some of us spend more time working on it than on a dayjob, we need a bucket of **ice** and slow down a little.
So we decided to extend the sprint period from 2 weeks to 4. Of course, this means we will be still constantly working on Disroot, but with the additional two week stretch we think it will feel less like groundhog day - with weekly meetings, sprint starts/stops, refinements becoming one long constant cycle kicking your butt on weekly basis (now its just bi-weekly :P). We know that in near future we need to focus more on financial sustainability beyond just paying hosting costs and accumulating money for hardware upgrades. We need to create an ecosystem where we can commit to Disroot, FLOSS and decentralized federated internet as our main occupation if we are going to continue. We have some ideas brewing and we will be more vocal about those more often in the coming year.
## Up next...
Current first 4 week sprint is called *"Catching that roadmap train"* and we will be focusing on finalizing the most important points of the current roadmap (Q4 2019) to start the new year with better setup, nicer onboarding- and user experience, clear minds and ideas on what to do next.

title: '[Sprint 5-6] New website, Disroot for groups'

category: news

body_classes: 'single single-post'
---
**Dear Disrooters,**
First, we would still like to wish you all a happy new year. The last 6 months have been a blast for us. A lot of hard work went into the Disroot project but it sure was seasoned with many fun challenges too. We would like to thank you all for using Disroot, testing it and sending us feedback. We really appreciate that. We are looking forward to upcoming months and hope you do to. We wish you all the best, success and lots a fun with your projects, actions and personal life.
Hokay,
**So what have we been busy with the last weeks?**
## New website
We got a bit bored and felt constrained with the old CMS weve been using, so we decided to move our website to good old WordPress. Antilopa did some amazing work tweaking the theme and making everything look pretty once again. We re-wrote some of the texts on the website and are now focusing on more useful functionalities on the website as well as adding more howtos and tutorials (contribution is more then welcome).
## Disroot for groups
This new feature has been brewing in our heads from the moment we started working on Disroot. We wanted it to be possible for groups to use all the features we offer as easy and independently as possible. We did a lot of work under the hood preparing for this service. A lot of configuration has been re-done to facilitate groups. The feature is still rough on the edges and needs some work but its usable enough to give it a go and let groups make use of it. Its also the best way to test and fix things up.
**So what would this new feature offer?**
- **Autonomous user management;** admins of groups can add new users, modify existing ones and request deletion or removal from the group.
- **Disroot services can be linked to your domain** (cloud.yourgroup.org, forum.yourgroup.org)
- **Disroot can handle your E-mail using your domain** (member@yourgoup.org) that includes your administrative E-mail accounts (info@yourgroup.org)
- **You can request email aliases** to be assigned to any of your E-mail accounts (still in planning: providing interface for group admin to manage email aliases)
- **Every new user that is created by group admin is added to the group** (meaning it has access to shared folders of the group, gets added to contact lists, gets added to chat roster, gets added to the forum group)
- **Every group gets its own forum space which can be public or private**
## Whats coming up?
First thing Holidays \o/ Upcoming three weeks we arent planning a sprint. We want to use this time to focus on other projects we have been neglecting. We are of course going to monitor/use and fix any Disroot related problem.
Secondly we are planning to transform Disroot to an official organization. This is necessary to be able to ask / receive donations, and to share better the responsibility towards the platform (currently there is one person responsible for all the infrastructure / finances). Getting financial stability is very important for the service to grow and sustain its user-base.
And of course, more integration and polishing of user experience. We are planning to introduce SSO (Single Sign On) service. That means you will only need to login once to get access to all the Disroot goodies. We also want to have all Disroot services accessible via TOR. And of course add more interesting services, write more tutorials etc..
As always you can follow whats up and what are we up to [here](https://board.disroot.org/project/disroot-disroot/backlog)
cheers!
Disroot team

title: '[Sprint 7] Ethercalc, Owncloud9, starting on TOS, Disroot testers'
date: 04/11/2016
taxonomy:
category: news
tag: [disroot, news, calc,tos, testing]
body_classes: 'single single-post'

**Dear Disrooters,**
Spring is here! At least in Amsterdam.. Everything is waking up and life is pumping back into everything.
We are very happy to announce the long awaiting changes finally here to welcome this new season. Apart from updating all Disroot applications to the latest versions, weve also been working on some new things. Check it out!
## New Services and Features:
**[https://calc.disroot.org](https://calc.disroot.org)** One of the things we were still missing in Disroot was collaborative spreadsheet. Not any more. Ethercalc is a pretty decent piece of software for this purpose. Check it out and give us your feedback. Oh, and be sure to save your work elsewhere when youre done, because all spreadsheets that arent touched for over three months will be deleted from our servers.
**ownCloud9** New version of ownCloud is here. We are always very excited of new versions of software that bring a lot of changes, and this update of ownCloud is no different. Here are the highlights:
- **New calendar and contacts app.** Totally rewritten and included in the core of ownCloud. Looks sleek and will guarantee stable performance. !!Important note!! The url to your contacts and calendars sync has changed to [https://cloud.disroot.org/remote.php/dav](https://cloud.disroot.org/remote.php/dav) (for both contacts and calendar) so please update your devices.
- **Tags and Comments** Now you can tag and comment on the files youre sharing or working together with others.
- **Activity feed and Notifications** to keep you updated on what is happening with your data.
- **New chat interface** the interface and the whole backend for XMPP chat went through a lot of changes. The UI has been redesigned, you can send and receive images inline of your chat window, and we are currently working on implementing audio/video conversation support (stay tuned). Please give it a shot and tell us your feedback at our chat disroot@chat.disroot.org
- **Pad and spreadsheet app** now you can manage and share your pads and spreadsheets just as any other file on your ownCloud storage. You can create new pads and spreadsheets by clicking on a plus icon in your files window just as if you would for new folder or a text file. The app will lead you to either pad.disroot.org or clac.disroot.org where you can work on your file. The app provides extra security by generating a long file name made out of random characters. This still means that anyone who knows the name could view and edit your file, but given the fact that the file names are random (e.g. 54pfvjt7veom) its very unlikely that unauthorised person or bots will find it. As mentioned above, pads or spreadsheets that havent been accessed for over 3 month, will be deleted. Detailed howto can be found here: [https://forum.disroot.org/t/owncloud-using-collaborative-pads-and-spreadsheets](https://forum.disroot.org/t/owncloud-using-collaborative-pads-and-spreadsheets)
**Xmpp** Chat now supports file upload via http. To keep all different xmpp clients compatible with one another our server will automatically upload the file via http server so that everyone you send the file can see it no matter what client they are using. The files will be deleted after 7 days of upload. For detailed list of plugins currently setup on the server check this page: https://disroot.org/chat/
## New policy: time limit on pads and spreadsheets
Starting from the 1st of June, we will introduce a new policy regarding pads expiry date. All pads or spreadsheets on [https://pad.disroot.org](https://pad.disroot.org) / [https://calc.disroot.org](https://calc.disroot.org) that are not edited for over 3 months will be automatically deleted. If you find this decision ludicrous, please let us know via email or (preferably) via the [disroot forum](https://forum.disroot.org) where we can have an open discussion to persuade one another.
## Terms of services, privacy policy.
We have started working on Terms of services and Privacy policy documents. All this juridical administrative mambo jumbo is really not our cup of tea, which is why it takes us so long. We sampled documents from other similar projects and tried our best to put some TOS text together. We will continue to work on it during the up coming sprint and we hope to have it ready to publish within next three weeks. We would very much appreciate help with those documents, so whether you have some experience writing this type of documents or not, please take a minute to review what we have so far:
https://pad.disroot.org/p/disroot-tos
## Disroot testing group.
First of, weve started a Disroot chat room. A place to talk directly to us, but also to find other disrooters, discuss disroot features or just complain about shit not working. check it out, add it to your bookmarks and come to say hi: disroot@chat.disroot.org
We are constantly looking to improve and expand our services, interface and usability. We are only human, so errors, bugs, problems, spelling mistakes or confusing functionalities are unavoidable. One way to contribute to the Disroot project is to become a hunter; Use the software, browse our website, try out everything and let us know if you bump into walls. We would also like to have a wider group that will try out new applications before we make them public.
In order to gather all those user experiences and feedback on new functionalities, we are going to start a testing group, with a dedicated forum, shared cloud and access to new, not-yet-public, services . We might send out specific requests to test new features or just gather your feedback, and open a discussion to really understand how we can improve usability.
If you are interested in joining our testers crew please send email to disroot-testers_at_disroot.org (you must have a Disroot account to opt-in)

Monday we have started new sprint.
Last sprint, was not as successful as we planned it to be. Due to personal issues, and the whole [shitshow with abusers](https://disroot.org/en/blog/temporary-closed-registration), we could not finish things we've planned. We did however, purge lots of abusive accounts, sent out the [disroot-matrix closure announcement](https://disroot.org/en/blog/matrix-closure) and tried matrix history room purging (which failed in spectacular 24h matrix downtime). On the good note we've sorted out the mailbox size counter on webmail so you can finally see your mailbox size 🤩:
![](mailboxsize.png)
In coming two weeks we want to put our focus on:
1. **Disroot Signup problem**
In the coming two weeks we will do lots of thinking, brainstorming and discussing the best way to re-enable registrations on disroot, while at the same time preventing the abuse we've dealt with in the last months. Since we are getting a lot of suggestions on all communication platforms and we want to share our thoughts, we've created a central place in the form of a forum thread where we will keep updating and discussing the matter. You can find it [here](https://forum.disroot.org/t/how-to-solve-the-abuse-problem-on-disroot-org-platform)
1. **Creating mockups for conversejs**
(currently our jabber webchat of choice https://webchat.disroot.org ) We want to work on a theme and extra set of features to make the webchat shine. We hope some of the community members will jump onboard and help us out too
2. **Jabber/XMPP improvements**
In order to be fully compliant with [xmpp compliance list](https://compliance.conversations.im/) we need to setup additional modules such as push notifications for iOS users and XMPP over TLS-443 port.
3. **Possibility to change screen name and notification email address**
Users should be able to choose and change their screennames and those should reflect accross all services (if possible). Additionally in order to not force everyone to use our email (eg. not every cloud user wants to use disroot mail), we want to make it possible to change the email address to which notifications are going to. This will prevent the need to setup forwarding filter rules on webmail.
4. **Purge continues**
We will continue trying to purge matrix room history to regain disk space on our database server. We have new ideas how to approach this issues and we hope (if all works well) with minimum downtime we will manage to purge all public rooms history down to last 4 months.
5. **New financial overview page**
Our current donation page is quite outdated. We are thinking on a better approach to display current financial state and costs to give better overview on what is happening to all people.
**Extras**
If for some reason coffee will keep us awake or we get fired form our dayjobs, we hope to put some love into the beetroot hubzilla theme.

Monday is a mark of yet another sprint. Last two weeks we spent mainly on wrapping our heads around finances. We've moved all of our accounting and financial administration to an awesome looking open source application called [akaunting](https://akaunting.com/). **Antilopa** did a great and very labor intense (and definitely not fun) job of punching in all the numbers from all over the place (paypal, bank account, liberapay, patreon etc) so we can have a clear overview of the current financial state. We are very pleased to see how well we stand financially (hope this trend will stay on course).
We've also managed to do some work on matrix purging. Currently we managed to shrink the database size from 400GB to about 168GB. All this after purging the history on all public rooms older then 4 months. It's a satisfying result and we hope that once we deactivate inactive users, this number will drop even more. This also means we will be running our purging script on regular basis to keep that number low and database clean. ( [script](https://git.fosscommunity.in/disroot/matrix_scripts/synapse_scripts/blob/master/purge_matrix_rooms.sh) if anyone wants to use on their instance).
We have also fixed small issues on xmpp side and we are now scoring 94% on [compliance test board](https://compliance.conversations.im/server/disroot.org/). Hopefully if we scramble few extra hours this coming weeks we will be providing jabber/xmpp service over web port 443 which will mean we are fully compliant.
While doing all this **muppeth** felt artistic and worked a bit on his vision of xmpp-webchat theme for [converse.js](https://conversejs.org) he wants to implement (beware, image below has alarming amount of cats):
![](sketch3.png)
(Its not totally finished and polished, but it gave us a general idea in which direction we want to go with the theme and the base to start implementing).
**Coming two weeks:**
In the upcoming sprint we will focus on the issue that led us to temporarily close the registration. We are planning to do series of brainstorm sessions (between both admins internally, closed group of active disrooters, on the chat and the forum), outcome of which will be hopefully a decision on how to deal with future registrations. We also hope that we will have an idea of how to implement the solution and that it won't take long.
*To everyone who has been asking for account creation:* Please be a bit more patient. We do not want to create accounts on per request basis because of the amounts of them we get on regular basis. If we do not come up with a solid solution in upcoming sprint, or if the implementation will take long time, we will however create user-accounts on per request basis.
Additionally to solving the registration issue, general maintenance, updates, and solving little things here and there, we will implement a new disroot donation page.
For a while now we realized that current donation page was not really illustrating the current state. The planned budget we estimated in august last year was depleted already in January when we invested lots of money in the hardware and that was just the beginning on the year! We recently began to think on ways to better show the situation and give better overview on our monthly income and costs as well as introduce some goals we would like to strive to. We think we came up with a quite nice idea, and we hope you will find it interesting once its online within next two weeks time.
As always, you can follow the development via our [taiga board](https://board.disroot.org/project/disroot-disroot/taskboard/solve-registration?milestone=214)

When we started Disroot, we wanted to have a bunch of privacy respecting tools and share them with other people, with a community of those who may share our ethical or technical choices. We had put a lot of our time and effort to build this platform and give the best and useful free and open source solutions we could find, sharing our experience and knowledge in the process. Thats the Disroot essence.
Since a year ago, were experiencing a non-stop growing problem with our email service. Now we have a huge amount of abuse accounts stealing our time and creating a lot of troubles every single day. That means we dedicated significant chunk of our lives trying to solve this issue instead of improving the services. Currently we bet that about 80% of our user base are scammers, spammers and abusers of all sort. Most of our energy goes into fighting these people and we are continuously maintaining a platform that is being abused by people with ill intentions. We know that as a result of our recent popularity we should expect a certain percentage of shady accounts, but in the current situation this percentage has become overwhelming with a number far exceeding the credible Disrooters we want to support. This is not only an irritant for us but a threat to the credibility of the platform and therefore to all who are using it trustfully.
This means we need to find a solution to this problem. For now we've decided to close registrations as a protection measure for our users and Disroot itself while we are trying to think of proper ways to solve it.
In coming days we will be busy cleaning up our user-base from all the abusive "pest" accounts and we will plan out how to go about user registration in the future. We want to maintain the model where onboarding is as easy as can be and where anyone could join the Disroot community and feel right at home. At the same time we want to prevent malicious behavior from ruining it for all of us. It's a hard nut to crack but we hope to find a solution that will satisfy most of us.

Already a couple of sprints of 2020 are behind us. Lots of new things we've been working on and going trough a bit of a chaos. Therefore we decided to change the length of our planned short term work (sprint) from 2 to 4 weeks. This gives us a bit more breathing space and slows down the pase a little. Additionally we've went though some extra administrative improvements on how we divide and oversee each-other work, and give feedback. This hopefully will reduce chaos and improve the work comfort we had in last few weeks.
Ok, so let's jump right into what's new.
## Privacy Statement and Terms of Service version 1.2
For a while now we've been working on new version of our **Privacy Statement**. **Fede** took a leading role in getting all the ideas and missing information together and thanks to him we have a new version of the documents. There are no major changes to the essence of the document, although there are notable changes in the organization, structure and clarity of content. We focused on making it as clear and detailed as possible so that it is easy to read and understand. And, of course, also to comply with the **GDPR** guidelines. We added detailed information about the specifics of each service provided by **Disroot.org**. We hope you will appreciate the work and that things are more clear. Additionally, in order to better follow changes to the **Privacy Statement** we have created a git repository (version control system) [here](https://git.disroot.org/Disroot/Disroot-Privacy-Policy/commits/branch/master) where you can follow all the changes to the document.
Hopefully it will also help all users of the online services to be more responsible with their data - regardless of the continent they live in, the regulations in force, the providers they use and the needs they have - and to know how to defend it.
**Terms of Service**'s changes are also cosmetic besides new addition of minimum age requirement which we set to be 16 years old. Similarly to **Privacy Statement** changes to the document can be followed [here](https://git.disroot.org/Disroot/Disroot-TOS/commits/branch.master).
## Etherpad and XMPP data storage retention
Two other notable changes in the new Privacy Statement is the modification in the retention times for data stored on both, **Etherpad** and **chat(XMPP)**.
For Etherpad (as well as Ethercalc) pads that have been untouched for 6 months will be removed from the server.
XMPP Chat history storage period was also changed from 6 to 1 month. After consulting with other Admins, XMPP server developers and users, we concluded that the six months value was oversized. Since our devices store the history, server should store just a minimum and reasonable amount and we think one month is enough.
This change will be effective starting from 1st April. This gives you three weeks to prepare if you need to.
## Preparation work
We spent January and February on preparing the ground for all upcoming work for our main themes: **email improvements and Hubzilla launch**. All this will allow us to properly work on things like mailbox encryption, better spam protection, new webmail, as well as ton of improvements on our Hubzilla instance (DisHub) and our Android Hubzilla app called Nomad. As boring as it seems, this work was essential for the flashy improvements to come.
## Update to Nextcloud 18
Yup. Finally has landed. Last weekend we have rolled out the update a lot of you have been waiting for. Quick disclaimer. OnlyOffice solution still does not seem to be supported by the server side encryption we use, however we are still looking into it to confirm for sure.
Here's some highlights of the new features available:
- **File app** - Folder header allows to add additional information in a form of readme file displayed on top of the folder. You can now see the list of users you share the file with.
- **Photo app** - The Gallery app has been replaced by the Photo app. It looks refreshed and allows to share photos easier.
- **Calendar app** - You can now create a Talk room directly from the Calendar app, which allows to collaboratively discuss an event.
- **Change ownership** - Allows for easy transfer the ownership of a file or a folder to another user.
- **Video verification of password protected files** - Enable video verification of your password enabled shares for better security
## The Phenomenal 2019 End of the Year Bonus Alias Challenge
In December 2019, the goal for our fund-raising campaign was reached! We've raised 1500€. We would like to thank once again to everyone who decided to donate to Disroot throughout the entire year! We are very grateful.
As for now, each Disrooter has a new alias: *yourusername@getgoogleoff.me*
If you don't know how to set it up, check our [tutorial](https://howto.disroot.org/en/tutorials/email/alias)
## Roundcube testing
As some of you know, we are planning to replace current Rainloop webmail with Roundcube. The reason for that is that we believe that Roundcube can better integrate with what we are planning to do in the near future (wkd, gpg) but also looks to be much more polished email solution. Additionally we want to do better Nextcloud and XMPP integration in the webmail and so we decided to Roundcube is the platform we could achieve that. For those who want to have a sneak peak and help us with feedback, suggestions, and shape the new webmail, you can already use it at http://roundcube.disroot.org Just bare in mind this is test instance which means things can break or we can wipe your settings (not your emails though).
## Coming up
This month we continue the preparation work. We are working on improvements to custom domain linking which, as some of you experienced, feels like a never ending long waiting chore.
To provide better overview for ourselves and perhaps Hubzilla community at large, we want to document our ideas for visual improvements to it. This will, on one hand, allow us to set a goal on how we want our Hubzilla instance to look and feel (we are not only talking about theme but overall user experience), but also, we hope, this will help Hubzilla developers to improve this amazing piece of software.
One other thing we plan to push this month is our Yearly Report which as you noticed is a bit overdue given it is already March. But, hey, it was a really busy end and start of the year.
**Everyone, stay safe, take care of yourself and your close ones. Stay home if you can, and let's get through this weird surreal time fast and without too much totalitarian, dystopian aftermath to deal with later.**

**Switching off Matrix and Diaspora.**
### Matrix
As you might remember, two years ago we have decided to no longer provide Matrix as a service ([Blog post](https://disroot.org/en/blog/matrix-closure)). Reason for that decision, apart from a growing un-addressed privacy concerns, was also the huge server resources needed to operate what is essentially a Text based chat application. We have decided to go back to the roots and rather focus on providing XMPP as our go-to chat solution. Since the announcement we have been slowly removing inactive accounts. At this moment we are left with only a handfull of users, but still the amount of resources that are used is unacceptably big: our current Matrix server happily consumes about 5GB of RAM (database ram usage not counted), and takes 170GB of database storage. We find this a tremendous waste of resources and so we have decided it is time to shut the lights off. And so, by 1st of December we will switch off our Matrix server entirely. We hope those who are still using it will understand our decision and we hope they will find a new home on another homeserver.
### Diaspora
Since the announcement of phasing out our Diaspora instance ([Blog post](https://disroot.org/en/blog/demise-diaspora)), we noticed huge drop in our pod active users. We have reached the state of just few users within first two months. Therefore, unlike Matrix phasing out, the decision to switch the lights off on Diaspora\* aged much faster. Just like with Matrix, on 1st of December our pod will no longer be part of the federated network.
Once again we wanted to thank everyone involved during the years of providing us with the software that was one of the big inspirations to start Disroot in the first place. Maybe one day we will meet again in the federated multiverse.
# New Nextcloud apps
Recently we have enabled few new apps on Nextcloud some of you were requesting for a while. Those are:
- **Forms** - Without too much distracting options. To the point, simple surveys and questionnaires app. Forms allows for export of results to CSV file similar to what Google forms does. <https://apps.nextcloud.com/apps/forms>
- **Appointments** - Book appointments into your calendar via secure online form. Attendees can confirm or cancel their appointments via an email link. <https://apps.nextcloud.com/apps/appointments>
- **Cospend** - Nextcloud Cospend is a group/shared budget manager. You can use it when you share a house, when you go on vacation with friends, whenever you share money with others. <https://apps.nextcloud.com/apps/cospend>
We hope you will like the additional apps and find them useful in your daily life. We are already using it internally and enjoying it quite much. Some detailed tutorials will follow, however if you want to give us a helping hand, you can join the Howto community at howto@chat.disroot.org
# Nextcloud performance hit
As all of you probably noticed, the past weeks we experience some issues with some services. The cause of this is unfortunately Nextcloud. We seem to be hitting some issue which we yet need to find the root cause of. For now we have moved some services affected by the Nextcloud's performance hit to another box which means that at least those will work properly. In comming days we will try to focus on the issue and find the root cause. Sorry for this turbulence.

Is it just me or we have the hottest summer ever? We haven't posted anything about our last sprints, and this time we are also late. Of course we can blame it on the weather (thank you Climate change), but with all seriousness we have not spend that time on the beach as title would suggest, although probably we should have. The reason for this was that, charged with new energy with new members of the gang, we simply over estimated our capacity and took way more then we can carry on ourselves. This resulted in many tasks started but not as many finished on time. Lesson learned this time, we have decided on the current sprint titled **"No more than two User Stories per person"** to change that and try to create environment where we do not take a too heavy load. Hopefully this will prevent us from creating situation where we live under constant stress, trying to deliver what we promised but not managing to finish everything on time, which leads to burn-out, depressions, frustrations and other nasty dark things humans have to cope with. The new rule prevents that and creates much easier and happier environment. We hope it will work out good, about which you should probably read in a week time when we finish another sprint.
<br><br>
In the mean time, enjoy great weather, go to the beach before the catastrophic consequences of human existence kill us all.

This time we are bringing you several announcements and some big news we can't wait to share with you.
## Nextcloud performance improvements
The last two weeks we've been focusing on fixing some long standing issues. Our Nextcloud instance seemed to be consuming a lot more resources than it should. After weeks of battling and searching for the root cause on our Nextcloud setup, we have finally managed to find it and fix it. The issue was related to what seems like a bug in Bookmarks app that caused the creation of millions of cache files, causing enormous strain on our CPU. After simply removing all bookmark cache files, the issue has stopped and Nextcloud did not produce new caches since. In turn, our CPU load has dropped by a factor of 5, which is great news. Nextcloud feels very snappy again and our stress levels are back to where we can actually focus on other things.
## Hubzilla still not happy
Unfortunately we can't say the same about our Hubzilla instance. As some of you know, for the last year or so, we've been experimenting with a new federated services platform called Hubzilla. Our goal is to bring it to a state where we can provide it to a wider Disrooters audience. For the last weeks however, we are struggling with stability of the platform. We think we have identified the root cause but we have not manage to fix it yet. The work on this will continue throughout the upcoming sprints. We want to focus more of our time and energy on this project as we think Hubzilla is the go to social network experience and we would love to promote it.
## XMPP page and botcamp
Antilopa has worked on new looks for the XMPP page which now includes more information about the beloved chat protocol and our particular setup and lists a number of XMPP clients. The changes look great and we will be implementing them throughout all the pages in the coming sprints. [https://disroot.org/en/services/xmpp](https://disroot.org/en/services/xmpp)
<br><br>
We have also started deployment of XMPP bots. Bots appear to look like normal users in the chats but they are in fact, programs. They can do a lot of things, from remembering and reminding things for you, keeping track of your meetings or telling you the weather, to completely useless tasks such as sending you pictures of kittens, creating memes or even throwing insults at you. All the bots hang out at: **botcamp@chat.disroot.org** where you can test them out. At this moment you can't just simply invite them to your room so you need to request it to the admins (best via disroot@chat.disroot.org room) but soon we hope to find a solution to that also, so you will be able to invite bots to your room without admins interaction. As mentioned in the previous post, if you are looking for home for your bot, we are running a special XMPP instance that is dedicated to bot hosting.
## An improved Disroot Team.
We are very proud and extremely happy to announce our team has grown. Since the inception almost 4 years ago the Disroot team consisted of two people: Muppeth and Antilopa. For the past two years a group of fanatically dedicated Disrooters was helping us in all sort of ways. Starting from translations, writing howtos, creating Hubzilla and Disroot apps, helping test features and debug issues and much much more. It did feel for us they were part of the family and it just felt natural that they officially join the team receiving all the fame and glory but also sharing the workload and responsibility for the operation and well-being of the platform. We are very grateful for all the work they have done so far and we would like to introduce to you the new members of the Disroot Team: Fede, Maryjane, Meaz and Massimiliano. For all of us it's a new experience and this definitely starts a new chapter for the project. In the coming weeks we will focus on finding the best way to coordinate and plan work, share knowledge and tasks, develop optimal decision making process and tons of other processes.
## Mission Statement
Yup, we finally got around to it. Since the moment we officially registered our non-profit foundation, we wanted to write a mission statement defining our ideas. After two years we have finally created such document. Our mission statement defines our ideas for Disroot.org Project, its principals, our view on funding, decision making process and our ambitions for the future. You can read it [here](https://disroot.org/en/mission-statement)
<br><br><br>
As you can see, there are quite some things going on. With new members and extreme high energy we will strive to provide the best experience ever, while having a lot fun doing it.
<br><br>
If you haven't done it yet, please think about contributing. The monthly contribution of "a coffee of your choice" for your beloved web services platform is really necessary because we choose to NOT finance it by doing business with people's data. It is also important to remember that if all users could donate the equivalent of just one coffee a month, that would not only help us keep the platform running and improve services for everyone (for those who can contribute financially and for those who can't), it would also allow us to expand the scope of the project. Please check our [donation page](https://disroot.org/en/donate) for detailed overview.
<br><br><br>
And talking about expanding the scope, if you run a community, an interesting project or something you would like to share with other Disrooters, send us an email to *discover_at_disroot.org* and we will give you a shout-out in our blog posts.
